Diary of an Aussie Disney Honeymooner

Mini TR: A quick KL escape

We've just got back from a few days in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Thought I'd add it in here in case anyone is interested, plus we did do some recon for our big trip while we were there 😉

This started out as a much-needed solo getaway, so I chose KL as the quickest, easiest, cheapest place to get to where I would feel comfortable on my own. A direct flight on AirAsia is only 5.5 hours and less than AUD $400. I only had 4 nights to play with, and the trip was mainly for relaxing, not sightseeing, so initially I'd booked an inexpensive hotel on the outskirts of the city. Then Ben decided he would be able to come along after all lol! So I booked his flight too and paid the extra to choose seats so that we could sit together. He'd always told me how much he loves KL, so I moved us to a hotel closer to the action.

We had a very civilised flight over - leaving mid-morning and arriving mid-afternoon. We bought 3-day PT passes for about $8 each and took the train from the airport. As usual, were led astray by Google Maps. By the time we found the hotel, checked in and freshened up, it was time to head out for dinner. We wandered for a while and eventually found a middle eastern restaurant that looked good (and it was). We finished the evening with drinks by the rooftop pool back at the hotel.

Our first full day we got up at our leisure and enjoyed the buffet breakfast at the hotel (with the usual mix of western and Asian style offerings). Then we walked down to our nearest station and took the monorail to the end of the line. From there we picked a couple of train lines that did a bit of a loop out of the city and back. We ended up close to FRIM (Forest Research Institute Malaysia), and decided to take a Grab the rest of the way there for the skywalk (about $3). Unfortunately Mr Google forgot to mention that they close for lunch from 12pm-2pm, and we arrived at about 12:02pm. We grabbed a couple of waters and some pre-cut fruit from a street vendor for about $3, paid the $3 entry each, and wandered around for a while. It was pretty, but the heat and humidity were pretty bad, and it wasn't spectacular, so we weren't willing to hang around for 2 hours.

1717482407821.png

We took another Grab back to the station (about $2.50) to continue our train tour. Back in the city we decided on a whim to check out Chinatown. First stop was the Central Market, where we bought some t-shirts and cheap bulk hand fans for the wedding, and paid about $3 each for a fish spa. We'd actually done quite a lot of walking by then and our feet did feel better afterwards.

1717482492872.png

As we made our way outside to find somewhere for a drink, we could hear thunder rolling in, so I suggested we go to the place with a covered terrace where I thought it would be great to sit and watch the storm pass by. Turned out to be pretty big storm and we were there for a while lol! We ended up having something to eat there too. It was actually a Spanish place with not much of interest to us on the menu, so we just shared a dips platter which was actually pretty good and quite filling. Once the storm had passed we continued our exploration, checking out the Kasturi Walk next door, and Jalan Petaling a bit further up the road. We had bought a few more things and were feeling a bit like pack horses, and it was still raining on and off, so we decided to head back to the hotel.

1717482570626.png

On our way, we stumbled across a junior basketball game that Ben was very keen to watch, so we paid about $3 each for entry, found some seats and randomly watched Kedah vs Sabah u17s. We eventually made our way back to the hotel (many of the stations are linked by bridges or underground tunnels that Google Maps doesn't know about!). We realised we still needed to have actual dinner, but it was after 9:30pm by then, so the only place still open was a very local street food vendor - we did ask at the hotel and they confirmed it was good. We ended up with some very tasty nasi lemak and rendang.

For day 2 we decided to start by going back to Chinatown for massages and another fish spa. We got off at a different station that ended up being a lucky fluke as it was a lovely area full of interesting old buildings and landscaping. We probably spent an hour wandering up to Chinatown from the station.

1717482741552.png

1717482751582.png

We got our massages and some tasty nasi lemak with ayam goreng (fried chicken) for lunch. We then decided that we wanted to be closer to that area for our honeymoon trip, so thought we'd check out some nearby accommodation. Accommodation within Chinatown was mostly low budget, but we found a couple of hotels on the outskirts of the area that looked nice, and decided to check them out to see what the location was actually like. We had obviously picked the complicated way to get to the first one, and were wandering for a LONG time trying to find it. The lobby was amazing when we did find it, perhaps a little too snooty for us and not convenient enough. We did manage to find a closer train station though, which linked to the main KL Sentral station via a long underground tunnel, and took a train to the next hotel at the other end of Chinatown. We were immediately impressed by the location literally next to the monorail station and with large shopping centres across the road and at the back. It also appeared to be easily accessible via another train station on a different line. We were equally as impressed by the luxurious lobby, and asked the concierge if we could have a look around. He immediately organised a little tour for us, showed us a couple of rooms, restaurants, spa and pool area with a view of the KL Tower. We were sold.

After our tour we headed across to the large shopping centre for some cold drinks, and Ben thought he was getting a bit of a scratchy throat so wanted to get some lozenges. It was getting late-ish by then, so we decided to just head back to the hotel to hang out by the pool for the rest of the day. We had a swim, watched the sunset with some drinks and shared some wedges for dinner, then just watched a movie back in our room.

The morning of our last full day, Ben woke up with a full-blown flu. Fever, headache, congestion, cough, nausea... you name it, he had it. He stayed in bed while I went down for breakfast and then tried to find a chemist. Nothing was open until 10am, so I decided to check out the larger shopping centre across the road. It was kind of hard to get to - I felt more comfortable taking the monorail back! It was 10 floors plus a basement level, and this was just one wing of 3. Somewhere in there was a theme park but I certainly couldn't see any sign of it! I did find a chemist though and a supermarket to pick up a few things in case Ben felt like eating/drinking.

1717482874158.png

Having dropped off the supplies for Ben, and purchased an extra day's worth of transport (about $3), I decided to check out the botanic gardens, as that wouldn't have been much of much interest to Ben. Once again, I approached from the wrong side and found myself wondering if I was somewhere I shouldn't be, and wandering for what seemed like a long time! Eventually though I did come across the entrance to the orchid garden, which turned into the hibiscus garden. It was all very quiet and I spent a while wandering through taking photos.

1717483015653.png

I'd run out of water while I was wandering and, conscious of the heat, felt it was important to find somewhere to replenish. I eventually managed to find my way to a very local cafeteria style place. It had been quite busy with locals, so I bravely tried a couple of the dishes on offer, which were very tasty and I hoped wouldn't make me sick! Back to the gardens, I wandered along the other side in the direction of the train station, and saw a lovely stream and lake, some fun kids playgrounds, and a very nice sunken garden where there were 2 couples having wedding portraits taken. I couldn't help but wonder how they were managing in formal suits and gowns when I was struggling in a cool loose sundress. There was a little kiosk near the main lake where I got a much-needed Fanta, as my water from lunch was nearly gone! Then it was just a short stroll along the edge of the lake back to the museum and attached train station.

1717483048326.png

I'd been walking for hours, so I decided not to bother with the museum, although there were some interesting artifacts on the outside that I had a quick look at as I walked past. I had been planning to go back to Chinatown for another massage, but couldn't be bothered by then so I looked for a place at KL Sentral. It was about twice the price of the place in Chinatown (still only about $30 for an hour massage though!) but much nicer and I left feeling much more human and like I could actually make it back to the hotel.

On the monorail back to the hotel, the skies opened up, so I decided to find somewhere for dinner at the large shopping centre attached to the station, and ended up with a fast food version of nasi lemak with ayam goreng, which was still pretty good! Then picked up some more supplies for Ben and headed back to the hotel. He was starting to feel a bit better, so managed to eat a bit of watermelon and drink some electrolyte drink and we watched a movie.

Luckily Ben was feeling a LOT better the next morning, and was able to have some breakfast with me before a late morning departure for the airport. Given the circumstances, we decided to just order a Grab, which was only about $20 but I think our driver thought he was in the F1 so it was a bit of a nerve-wracking drive! For our honeymoon I think I'll investigate private drivers - will be a bit more expensive but I think worth it for peace of mind. After a non-eventful flight (the best kind), we made it home to some very happy doggies!

A change of plan

If you haven't read my mini KL TR, the gist is that we decided to do a little recon while we were there, and ended up deciding we wanted a different location for our hotel. We've now booked the Sheraton Imperial.

For those who don’t know me yet, I go by zanzibar on these boards, but my real name is Lana.
Saw you posting on Steppesister's TR and noticed you had a PTR in your siggie.
Word of warning, though... I don't really post/comment much on PTRs. I prefer to read TRs. i.e. Read what happened rather than what will happen. :)
We definitely both enjoy our fair share of geeky interests including gaming, Lego and board games.
I don't do Lego... although I used to. But... we'd get along just fine. :)
I’ll keep this page up to date with all our current plans, what we have planned, booked etc.
popcorn::
Road trip around the Vegas area, stopping in at Hoover Dam and Kingman/Oatman on Route 66
Been to all three, although Kingman was just a stop.
We are flying premium cabins using frequent flyer points
Nice and nicer!
Ben will want to take the tour, and I want to cross the memorial bridge as I didn't do that last time.
Whooo...
I need a redo. I have done that bridge. It was so windy that it actually knocked me back a step. On top of that, there was a driving rain. I did not dally.
We will have 14 nights in Orlando (so 13 full days),
Wonderful!
Ben really wanted to go to Kennedy Space Center,
Very, very good choice. The place is amazing. I don't know about you, but I'm positive he'll love it. (You'll love it too if you are at all interested in space/space travel)

I'll come back to read the KL update when I have a spare minute.

Welcome aboard! Definitely planning to do a TR after the trip as well, which I'm sure will be MUCH more exciting!

Yikes, I hope we get better weather for our trip 🤞

Hmm I was actually looking at our plans thinking we may not have time for KSC in the end, but maybe we should make the effort 🤔 TBH not really my thing so I'd rather prioritise Disney... and manatees 😉 Having said that, there is a very high chance that Ben will be Disney'd out if we do 14 days straight 😂

I chose KL as the quickest, easiest, cheapest place to get to where I would feel comfortable on my own.
This made me smile. KL is 13,500km from where I live. It definitely wouldn't be the quickest, easiest or cheapest place for me to go!
A direct flight on AirAsia is only 5.5 hours and less than AUD $400.
Not bad! CAD and AUD are pretty close to par. Right now, 400AUD is 365CAD
We bought 3-day PT passes for about $8 each
Can you explain what that is? I know it has something to do with transportation, but then you mention buying various other forms of transport.
1717482285324.png
Looks very inviting.
Unfortunately Mr Google forgot to mention that they close for lunch from 12pm-2pm, and we arrived at about 12:02pm.
:headache:
paid about $3 each for a fish spa. We'd actually done quite a lot of walking by then and our feet did feel better afterwards.
Interesting. Those are banned on this side of the pond in some places. I looked it up. In Canada it's banned in 3 provinces and in 18 US states.
Kasturi Walk next door, and Jalan Petaling a bit further up the road. We had bought a few more things and were feeling a bit like pack horses, and it was still raining on and off, so we decided to head back to the hotel.

Huh! I don't think I would've thought to do that.
We ended up with some very tasty nasi lemak and rendang.
I had to Google what that was. Sounds tasty!
For day 2 we decided to start by going back to Chinatown for massages and another fish spa.
Bring on the fish! :fish:

I like those kinds of mistakes. :)

Oh, no. :(
Sorry to hear that. Not fun.
It was 10 floors plus a basement level, and this was just one wing of 3.
:faint:
I decided to check out the botanic gardens, as that wouldn't have been much of much interest to Ben.
But definitely would've interested me. Been to several botanic gardens.
Pretty!

Yikes, I hope we get better weather for our trip 🤞
Me too!

I've tried to see manatees on a couple of trips, without luck. Mind you, I wasn't in an extremely high percentage place, but... It also depends on the season. In winter (when you're in FL) I think your odds are much higher as they tend to come into the warmer rivers.

Having said that... I was pretty much gobsmacked when I first saw the immensity of a Saturn V rocket. And the Shuttle display is really something to see.

:rotfl: I have the same thoughts sometimes when I hear people mention a weekend getaway to Mexico or the Caribbean.

FWIW, we will have to travel over 18,000km to get to Orlando 😉

Can you explain what that is? I know it has something to do with transportation, but then you mention buying various other forms of transport.
Ah sorry, Public Transport! It covered all the trains including the airport line, plus the monorail in the city (plus buses, but I generally avoid buses like the plague).

Interesting. Those are banned on this side of the pond in some places. I looked it up. In Canada it's banned in 3 provinces and in 18 US states.
I just remembered how nice it was when I was in Thailand and visited a waterfall where these fish were naturally occurring, but probably didn't really think through the hygiene or ethical implications of the 'salon' environment 🤔 We didn't see many of them around, which I guess means that most people are probably more aware than we were 😉

Is this a photo of either Kasturi Walk or Jalan Petaling?
That is the Kasturi Walk.

Huh! I don't think I would've thought to do that.
Ben is a bit of a basketball nut, and he used to coach juniors, so was interested to see. I still can't believe that he heard a basketball game happening inside a stadium that was about a block away from where we were walking along a busy street in the rain, and managed to follow the sound to the source. Where is that acute sense of hearing when I'm asking him to do a load of laundry? 😂

From what I've read, we'll be pretty much visiting at peak manatee time, so we definitely have to give it a try!

You've definitely convinced me to consider adding KSC back into the itinerary 👍 Trying to keep some of our plans a little fluid as I don't know how much tolerance Ben is going to have for Disney, so we can maybe pencil this in for a non-Disney day and re-evaluate closer to the time.

::yes::

And... FWIW on my side... while I do fly to Orlando... I also drive on occasion. And that isn't a one day trip, let me tell ya!

That would explain it, then.

I'm not sure if that's impressive or obsessive! :lmao:

There's also an interesting recreation of an Apollo launch that is pretty neat, and a memorial for the Challenger and Columbia tragedies that I found to be very moving.

All that research for nothing!

A couple of months ago when I was looking at WDW tickets and putting together a rough plan of our potential park itinerary, I spent days trawling through the threads on Genie + and Lightning Lanes, and had finally got myself to a point where I felt comfortable with it all. And now I have to go through all that again to learn about the new multi and individual lightning lanes system! From the very quick glance read through I've had time for, it looks like the booking window opens 7 days prior to check-in at an onsite resort, so for us that will mean 3 separate booking windows...
  • Sadly the first is very likely to be mid-flight halfway over the Pacific lol! We've got nothing on that night though, so I can get straight onto it as soon as we get to our hotel in LA. That will cover our first 4 days.
  • Our second booking window should open while we're in Vegas, so I'll just have to look up the time difference and try to make sure I can get online at that time. Hopefully since that will cover 7 days, we'll have a bit of flexibility, especially towards the end of our booking window.
  • Our third booking window will open on our check-in day for BLT, so we'll already be onsite and in the correct time zone. That will cover our last 3 days. Not planning to go hard in the parks for those days, but it'll be a good opportunity to do anything we may have missed or sneak an extra ride in for something that was tricky to get.
All subject to specific timing of course, which I haven't looked that much into yet.

Honestly though, I think the new system will be much better in general! I definitely was NOT planning to get up at 7am every morning to be booking lightning lanes, so this should give us the opportunity to be able to book some good rides for some of our later start days as well.

Then you know more about it than I do. I've only just heard that there were changes... yesterday? And no idea what they are. Except after reading this, I at least have an inkling.

OMG the controversy with these changes after I posted this!

Seems like international guests will only be able to book their lightning lanes once they arrive in the US (or, only confirmed this morning, Canada), and Disney has actually confirmed that this is the plan. Luckily this will not impact us since the Disney part of our trip is a week in and we'll have lots of time to be able to utilise this to its full advantage later in our stay. But for someone planning a quick international trip for 5 days or a week, they would lose any advantage of staying onsite, and would actually be at a significant disadvantage even compared to offsite guests.

We're all hopeful that Disney will come up with some sort of fix for this, but for now people in the international community are understandably a little concerned and will be closely watching to see how it all goes when it's rolled out.

I'm okay with this.

Can you say "We don't want you in our hotels" without actually saying "We don't want you in our hotels"?

:sad2:

Yeah it's pretty much a PR disaster for Disney internationally. Even if there turns out to be a fix/workaround for this, the fact that they announced it seemingly without any concern for the impact it would have on international guests has NOT gone down very well!

The best laid plans...

Gosh it's been a while since my last update. The biggest news is that our Southwest flight from Vegas to Orlando has been changed. We had been on a direct flight departing early-ish in the morning and arriving late in the afternoon. They advised that we had been moved to a new flight departing 2 hours earlier, with a 45 minute changeover in St Louis, and arriving in Orlando slightly after our original arrival time. They seem to have moved the direct flight later in the day now, departing closer to 2pm and arriving later that evening.

Took a bit of consideration over what we should do. I always prefer a direct flight, and it had been pointed out that the 45 minute turnaround in St Louis would be super tight and stressful. But I was struggling knowing that we've paid *so* much to have that first night at the Poly, and with the later flight not giving us *any* time to enjoy it that evening. I was just so looking forward to a nice relaxed arrival, hopefully before dark, and having a chance to enjoy the resort and perhaps even fireworks from our room so we'd be ready to get stuck into the parks for our first full day.

I was encouraged to consider this from a different perspective, that now we get to enjoy a nice leisurely morning in Vegas instead of having to deal with a pre-dawn start and rushing off to the airport. And we'll wake up at the Poly for our first morning at WDW, with the view of MK over the lake, and surrounded by all the magic. With 14 nights, we can afford to have a leisurely start that day, wake up when we wake up, have a relaxed breakfast and then hit the park for a few hours to take in the atmosphere and a few minor attractions, and can even come back to the hotel for the evening if we want an opportunity to watch the fireworks from our room. I'm feeling much better about it now and even looking forward to our nice relaxed first day.

And just for anyone following along who is interested in the wedding side of things, I have my dress!

It hasn't quite come together as smoothly as I'd hoped. My dressmaker had to retire due to a change in personal circumstances requiring a big move. She had to rush this through in the end with deadlines approaching for moving etc, even though we're still several months out from the wedding. She had misunderstood what I was wanting for the underskirt, which has turned out to be an ultra formal style in satin that I'll never get any wear out of. The corset is satin too, and she'd forgotten about the removable straps (twice, so I gave up) so it's not as versatile as I'd hoped. She'd also forgotten that I wanted cap sleeves on the lace topper (which I did make her fix!). I had also been under the impression that the skirt would have an ivory layer on top to make it blend with the top a bit more, but I didn't feel like I could raise this with her and put extra pressure on with the very limited timeframe.

Having said that, I'm pretty happy with the finished product, it's just been a bit of a disappointing experience. I do plan to take it to a seamstress closer to the wedding though to check the fit, add the removable straps for the corset, the ivory layer for the skirt and see if there's anything we can do about the underskirt. It's unfortunate that after having paid so much for a fully customised gown, I'm still going to be up for the extra cost of alterations 🤦‍♀️

So without further ado... here's the corset top with the full bridal skirt. I would have loved the top to have been finished with an organza layer too - you can see it's a slightly different colour than the skirt.

453613480_10161859234032272_2887015605662114571_n.jpg

And with the lace topper and veil. You can see how disjointed it looks without the ivory on the skirt. It was also at this point that I realised she hadn't added the cap sleeves, so she just pinned one on to check that I was happy with the look. This was actually my final fitting - mum had to pick the dress up for me while I was on a business trip, so I haven't even seen the finished dress yet!

Mum was kind enough to send me some photos of the finished product 😂

The dress is INCREDIBLE! I know you were disappointed with your dressmaker not listening (I would be too) but honestly, it kind of gives a Cinderella vibe, it's just so lovely.

I do see it now that you've pointed it out. However... still stunning.

Thank you so much! I do generally love how the dress turned out (and I was totally going for Cinderella vibes!), was just more disappointed with the experience. I'm actually really excited to go try on the final version, but I've come down with a cold this weekend so will have to wait a bit longer.

Ok, now where was I?

The last couple of months have been taken up by a large work event (that I'm on the organising committee for). We had actually planned it all out so that I wouldn't be planning the work event and the wedding/honeymoon at the same time. It worked perfectly - I was able to get all the major things locked in earlier in the year before I got too busy at work, and since June I've been able to focus pretty much on just work. The event was last week, which is great timing to now get stuck into some more of the detail for the wedding/honeymoon plans!

So what's happened with our honeymoon plans in the last few months?
  • Quite a few of our flights have been changed, but most changes are small enough that it won't impact our plans (other than the SW debacle).
  • The new lightning lane system has been rolled out, so I'll need to get my head around over the next couple of months. There's even rumours flying about a premium option, so I'll keep an eye on any progress there.
  • D23 has been and gone, with announcements regarding enhancements and (more importantly for us in the shorter term) ride closures. I'm hopeful that we will be able to catch Dinosaur, Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island before they disappear (and the Muppets if that rumour ends up being true)! Hopefully BTM and the train will still be operational for our trip. Disappointed that we won't get to ride TT, as I think Ben would have really enjoyed it.
  • AH parties have been announced. Disappointingly, there are only options for MK and EPCOT during our trip. We already have EEH (which we'd have to give up for AH), so I don't think it's going to be worth it for us. We would have considered AH at DHS.
  • And in breaking news, Tron's VQ has been dropped, which may impact our plan of attack for MK.
  • I'm a bit of a fan of Disneybounding, so also been thinking about some ideas for cute outfits for the trip. I'm sure Ben will be happy with his usual wardrobe of black shorts, black t-shirt and Jordans 😆
In wedding news, not much has happened. I still haven't got around to trying on my dress yet as I need someone to help me into it other than Ben lol! Most of my local friends are guys, so I'll have to get Mum to come around to help me at some point. Items on the agenda for the next few weeks are:
  • Trying on the dress and making plans for alterations.
  • Finalising the guest list and sending out invitations.
  • Finishing off the questionnaire from our celebrant.
  • Ordering the artificial flowers for our DIY florals and starting work on those.
  • Buying a wedding ring for Ben (we bought a bridal set for me so I'm already sorted).
  • Getting quotes on coffee carts to see whether it's going to be a viable option (it is a morning wedding after all!). In Australia, most people only drink barista-made coffee.
  • Starting to think about the order of events on the day and whether we need to add an extra hour of photography and/or content creation (currently we've only got 2 hour packages for both).
And in other news, we've got a short trip to Tasmania coming up in October. This trip is mostly organised, but I just need to book a couple of activities and consider whether I can change my departing flight to squeeze in a couple of days at the office on the way through.
