I am a Type 2, and have been to WDW many times. I will soon make my first trip as an observant T2. I got some good tips on the Restaurant board, and thought I might glean more here. Does anyone have and experience traveling with or as a diabetic? What were some good CS and snack places that didn't blow your carb counts?

I have good control of blood sugar thru exercise, diet, and oral meds, but need to be fairly vigilant on vacation.

I sent you a pm. Hope it helps.

I just wanted to say that we took my Type II-Diabetic mother to Disney last week for a week long vacation on the DDP and it was fabulous! We noted the fact that she has diabetes on every reservation and just reminded the server when we sat down. On the first day, I think my mom was a bit annoyed that we were calling attention to this, but she soon learned. Every TS restaurant has a sugar-free dessert option (including buffets). We thought we might need to all ahead, but checked with the concierge at our hotel and they assured us that we just needed to let the server know at the beginning of the meal and that it would be ready by the end of the meal.

In most places, the chef came right out to table to give my mother the best advice based on her specific dining needs. Boma stands out for their treatment. The chef personally escorted by mother around the buffet and then offered to make her a special version of the coconut curry seafood chowder with splenda. When he brought it out, the presentation was gorgeous and I have never seen so much seafood in one bowl. The presentation of the special dessert was just as outstanding. In the week that she was there, she had:

Apple Brown Betty- Ohana
Lemon Creme- Mama Melrose- They also had whole wheat pasta!
Chocolate Mousse- Akershus
Cheesecake (twice)- Biergarten, Boma
SF Chocolate Cake- Chef Mickey's

At the CS' meals, it was more hit or miss. She did run into SF brownies at several places (including Sunshine Seasons) and I returned to buy more using snack credits. There was SF ice cream the ice cream parlor on Main Street in the MK and sf pastries in the bakery on Main Street. She did have to settle for jello for several CS meals...which she reported wasn't that great.

All in all...she was treated royally (and this is a nice change from the "just make do" approach that many diabetics have to take when eating out). It was a go to destination for my mother just for the sf options available.

The best part was that the CM's seemed happy to oblige and did not make her feel like it was in inconvenience or that they were going out of their way!

Enjoy!

My son is type 1 so different but there is also a sugar-free fruit bar sold at some of the carts that is low in carbs - strawberry I think.

I'm sure you know but many "sugar-free" items - especially baked goods - are just about as high in carbs as regular stuff made with sugar. It might affect you differently of course - but we've found for our type 1 son it works as well to give him some of the desserts made with sugar - really depends on the dessert.

Someone reported on a type 1 board I read that the CS places now have carb counts on their items as well as the other nutritional info and ingredients in a binder - you can ask for the binder at the counter. We haven't confirmed this - it could be something new - but what a fantastic help that would be if true! (from our past trip all they had was the ingredient list - like for folks with allergies).

Have fun!
