We are going to BG in Wmsburg this week and this will be the 1st big place we have gone like this since DS7 was diagnosed w/ diabetes. I was wondering if anyone has been here and had any advice for BG in particular or just in general.

I'm wondering what to do w/ his insulin while we are in the park. We will be there all day. (Open to close) DS is on the pump, but we will need to have insulin availble to us in case something happens w/ his pump. I'm afraid our ice pack won't stay cold all day. It is supposed to be sunny and 65 when we are going. We can leave extra sets for his pump and other supplies in the car, but I don't know what to do w/ the insulin. Does anyone know if BG's has somewhere to store it, like the baby centers at Disney?

I'm am going to re-read Del's Wife's info about diabetes and Disney just for some extra tips.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. We have been on a beach vacation since he was dianosed, but nothing like Busch Gardens.

TIA!!:)

I dont' have experience with diabetes, but have been to BG many times. I know they have at least one first aid station. Perhaps you could call them to see if they could hold the insulin there for you? I hope you all have a great trip! We love BG.:goodvibes

Have not been to BG, but we did do WDW last August. DS was 6 and is on MDI, not a pump. I know there are recommendations for when to disconnect from the pump (drop rides and roller coasters, i thought) but do not know the details. I think Carol G. (selket), who gave me great advice before our trip, might know.

At any rate, I would not even cary my son's insulin on ice if the temperature was supposed to be 65 degrees. We don't start worrying about ice packs until the weather is approaching 80. In my experience, though, you should not have an issue with using a gel pack to last the day in that weather. it should keep your insulin quite cool.

DS ddid very well in the August heat at WDW, which was our biggest concern - he goes low very fast when he is running around in the heat. We did find that the adrenaline caused by some of the rides, etc. caused him to stay high for some time after the ride and he would then drop back down an hour or two later. I would just say test, test, test.

Have a great time!

There is a guest services kiosk right inside the entrance to the right. They were very helpful when my sons friend went with us. He HAS to carry epi pens everywhere he goes, even on rides.

We had a nice security guy who was checking our backpack help us out. We just had a few supplies w/ us in the back pack and DH explained what it was for. (we ended up leaving most extra stuff at the motel, we figured if there was a problem we could go back to the motel) The security guy said the BG policy now is that NO (or very little ones) bags/backpacks, etc. are to be carried into lines or on rides, so if anyone stopped us and tried to make us leave it, to tell them that DS had diabetes and we had medical supplies in there and they it had to physically be w/ us at all times. I don't think anyone ever questioned it, but I'm glad we knew about that in advance!!

I hadn't given an update yet, but everything went fine. His sugars were good all day and we had no set schedule what-so-ever. He rode the Loch Ness Monster and Big Bad Wolf. We were there from about 10:00am - 9:30pm. We also rode the Log Flume and Excape From Pompeii (sp?) and he just put his pump inside of his jeans and we all got soaked!!, but his pump was fine.

We are going back sometime this summer, probably in July (we upgraded our passes to the VA resident thing where we can go anytime before Sept. 1) and I might call them to see if they do have somewhere to store the insulin so we can have it there if we need it. It was a nice day when we were there, but the temp was probably in the high 60's and no humidity...nothing like it will be in July!!
