Diabetic's and the WDW Meal Plan, Do you use it??

Jennifer - If you are going to be walking the parks, you maybe able to have an ice cream.

I'm been very sedimentary the last few years due to injuries So all the walking I did at the parks caused my blood sugar to be lower once down to 40!! But that time I used glucose tabets. But other times I would share a Frozen Lemonade with Dh or Dd.

We just got back from WDW with our 9 yr. old Type 1 son. The Dining Plan was AWESOME! We didn't have a single low while we were there! They kept us so fed and we didn't have to haul around 1,000 snacks! Yeah for the Dining Plan!

Thank you All :grouphug:  for the advice.

I know I need to go see my Dr. but he needs a month of tests to see what to do.

I tell you that the test needle thingys HURT a bazillion times more the the shots do! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: I could take a 1000 shots and it wouldn't hurt as much. And i'm not a sissy either. :confused3

I keep hoping they will get that test watch thing to work. I did see on the news that the Goverment okayed Inhaled Insulin I will be bugging my hmo to get that!!!!

Okay who has something good to bite on so I can take the pain. Is it cheating if I put Orajel and Ambesol on my finger to deaden the pain first???? Maybe I am a sissy :guilty: darn!! I bet your kids don't bat an eye when you prick there fingers. lol

Heres a tip.....
When using your lancet to test blood sugar. Poke the side of your finger near the nail instead of the middle part o your finger.
It hurts a lot less as the side of your finger has less touch sensors. It has really helped me. It hurts a lot less. Everytime they test me at the hospital or in the Dr.'s office I remind them to do that. That helps to educate the nurses and medical staff also.

To the OP I used the meal plan the last I was at Disney and it worked fine. I also watch my carb intake. As others have said 15 grams of carbs= 1 carb exchange.

Good luck and have fun at Disney!

I am type 2 diabetic ...no meds, just excercise and diet. I have attended two classes with a diabetic instructor, one with a nutritionist, then a class with others for diet control and I got so much out of it.
I count carbs. But it is nothing now to do it. I know just by looking. I can have 45 carbs per meal or broken down three choices. I was not doing my AM snack or PM snack but just the evening snack. I did lose to much weight which was not the problem. I have looked over most of the restaurants that we will be going to in APril Disney visit and know what I MOST probably will order and where I want to be. I JUST love All Star Movies double cheeseburgers. SO I will probably have a half of one of those cause they are so big. and no fries. The fries do me in no matter what size portion they are. Just look at the restaurants before you go and decide almost ahead of time.
I test on the side of my fingers close to the top and I am doing pretty good at it now. It is not painful .....HONEST

Many newer lancet devices have adjustable depth-puncture settings, and very narrow guage (smaller) needles. Maybe it's time to try new equipment? Testing is fundamental to successful management.

for those who count the carbs for diet control. One dixie cup or a half cup of regularice cream is equal to 15 carbs or one choice for a snack.....I do that sometimes at night time in a glass of diet gingerale and it is an awesome float.

The meal plan can work BUT

it only includes one CS and one TS meal. Diabetics shouldn't skip meals and having a muffin and coffee in your room for breakfast may not work for you.

You may normally eat smaller meals, the TS meal comes with appetizer and dessert.

You must eat like my Dh!!!LOL!! :duck:
1. I don't drink coffee
2. I never eat sugar or carbs for breakfast, it is a sure way for me to feel sick all day.
3. Much better to start with a protien for breakfast, boiled egg,
cottage cheese, or tuna fish

And because of other health issues I eat after I've been up for a couple of hours and Ive never liked most breakfast foods. Dh teases me about eating lunch for breakfast. But that is what I have done ever since I had the chose!!

My DH is diabetic (on a pump), and we did the Dining plan only because it was free last August.
You get a counter service and table service mea and a snackl....EVERY DAY. Do you usually eat table service every night? Also, you get dessert with EVERY MEAL. I think the table service had appetizers included. All I can say was there was SO MUCH FOOD. We would share a couple of desserts and give (still wrapped) desserts away.

So, if you can really limit what you eat with this abundance of food around, it may be worth it. I would think though that ala cart would be better as you would not be so tempted.

My DD uses the Freestyle Flash to test her blood sugar. It takes the tiniest dot of blood & she can test in places other than her fingers. She uses her arm. She did it on me & you really can't feel it at all. Daughter's fingers were getting so sore, she stopped testing & didn't tell us (she was making up numbers) & ended up in the hospital. So I understand, but you really need to test.

It doesn't hurt to ask, sometimes a CM will allow you to have an appetizer instead of dessert. Usually not, but every once in a while ...

Dh and I were dining at The California Grill (at The Contemporary Resort) at DW in October, and I asked and was told, "not only can you, but you can have The Cheese Plate if you like!" I was so excited, and then she brought the cheese plate -- a teensy piece each of 4 different cheeses accompanied by a savory item - like a piece of artisan bread, or a dab of Tupelo Honey (which is now my favorite, so much so that my 19yo dd got me a bottle as a bday gift lol). But how nice to not have to think about dessert ... and I even shared some of dh's with him lol ;).

woo..old thread! Anyway, my 2cents:

I think having diabetes and talking to a chef at Disney isn't really the best option. Disney refuses to give carb counts or other helpful nutritional information for most of their foods (beyond packaged items) . Instead, they will simply assume "no sugar" and then they're not even sure what that really means. So there was a post a while ago from a mother who was dining with her child and instead of getting cake for her birthday they brought out fruit as if fruit could be eaten in unlimited quantities. For people with type 1 diabetes who are dependent on taking insulin for every bite of food they eat, fruit will often require just as much insulin as a piece of cake and sometimes is harder to deal with. For instance, ice cream is a great night time snack for our son after a long day of walking in the parks because it has a great balance of carbs/fat/protein which helps keep his blood sugar steady over night after all the exercise (especially the fat). But if we were to mention 'diabetes' to the chefs they would immediately say NOPE. So it's not as easy to say substitute an appetizer for a dessert. Both could be equally as carb laden.

I think the BEST thing to do is to bring along a copy of the Calorie King book (or get it or similar on your smart phone) and know what YOU can eat and which foods cause trouble and which do not. Not all diabetes is the same (type 1 / type 2) and not all people with diabetes can eat the same foods.

Until Disney decides that helping people in a meaningful manner by giving carb and fat content on their foods is just as appropriate as helping people with allergy items, then your best bet is to handle this yourself without the aid of Disney.

You're right of course. I usually don't even mention "diabetes" - just ask if I can switch the app/dessert. I am one of those who can eat sugar, fruit, etc. ... but different nutrients do affect people differently, even non-diabetics. I love that I live in a city where some nutritional info is now required to be posted on menus, and I'm always startled when in other places that do not list them. I do wish Disney would make them available :(. You can even go into any chain restaurant and if they don't have it in house, can point you to an internet source. Wake up, Disney.

I have inquired about switching the dessert for the app and was told absolutely not. And I suspect the reason is that since they cannot ask for proof of disability, everyone would claim to be diabetic to get the switch.

I haven't done the dining plan in years. It is just way too much food for most people even if you resolved the app/dessert issue.

I never tell the servers about the diabetes. I just ask for my food prepared the way I want it with allowable substitutions, such as a vegetable for a starch. The dining plan would be a huge waste of money for me!
