My fiance and I are going to Disneyland for our honeymoon. They do a good job at searching bags coming into the park and we were wondering how the park handles bringing needles into the park. He is insulin dependent and doesn't want to break up the time in the park going back to the room just to take his meds. Any advice on how to handle this situation?

Thanks!:

We've not been to DL, but at WDW, we just carried a letter from my boyfriend's endocrinologist stating that he's Type 1 and must have his syringes & insulin with him at all times. We went into three parks and Disney Quest, and only had to even show the letter one time (at DQ) - the rest of the time, a brief explanation was fine. They were very understanding and didn't make it a big deal - which makes sense, since surely they see this pretty often.

... and I meant to say, congratulations! :) Both on your upcoming wedding and the honeymoon to Disneyland - have a fabulous trip!

My son is diabetic and also is insulin dependent and we had no problems bringing in needles but this was Pre 9-11. Last trip he was on the insulin pen wich was very convinient no needles to take into the park just the tips for the pen. Also the kit we take with us has a small refreezable ice pack that keeps the Insulin cool so we can take it into the park and not worry about it getting to hot.
Best of luck and congratulations.

If your worried about the insulin getting too hot you can store the insulin at the First Aid station in each park. They have a refrigarator

People have posted that even after 9-11, they haven't had a problem, but I would suggest you carry something with you just in case. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Thanks for all the information. You all have been helpful!

Oh by the way has anyone talked to him about going on the insulin pump. I went on about a year ago and its pretty much changed my life. There are several benfits to doing it. Least of which is rock solid blood sugar control.

Just a thought.

Sue the only thing security did when they saw my syringes is to tell me where first aid was in case I needed it. Otherwise they did not bat an eyelash.

I remembered you had posted that you didn't have3 any problems, Lisa. I hope DL is the smae, but we haven't had anyone report from there.

We have been the WDW three times since my son has been insulin dependent, and once since 9/11. We carried a note from his doctor just in case, but had no problems at all. They must see quite a few! The search is no big deal at all.

We haven't been on a plane yet.

I did notice that some of the airline websites say that you should have a prescription and/or doctor letter for syringes. I don't think WDW sees syringes as a danger - it wouldn't be a good "terrorist" tool. But on an airplane, it could be a different story. Easy to inject someone with an unknown substance and no way to get away or get help really quickly.

PRE 9/11 the airline ask me to Only bring on the number of needle I would need to use. We had a 9hr flight so I prefilled two syringes.

But I still had a 6pk cooler bag packed with ALL my medicial supplies that I carried on. I wouldn't chance them lossing them in the hold or the syringes getting broken!!

Going to WDW if something happens to your syringes it is not a big problem. Syringes and insulin except for Humalog and maybe Lantus are not prescription items. You can just go into the pharmacy and buy them. Only exceptions are Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach counties. Figures where I live would be the problem.
