Diabetes - Medical Help - update pg2 #24

Too bad this is one disease where denial can kill you.

What type of foods should you eat? I tested borderline type 2 a week ago. All my doctor said was to diet. That was in a note, so I haven't had a chance to talk to him as he is on vacation.

Low sugar, low carb. Try to eat more vegetables and lower fat proteins. Lots of water. Honestly, just changing the way you snack can help alot. I quit the chips and sweets, keep baggies of pre-washed veggies to snack on, also have a water bottle with me when I'm out.

They will probably schedule you for a class, they did with my DH but he didn't go. I know that the diet is what we all should eat. Very little sweets/carbs, low fat all that good for you stuff.

Have semi good news on DH, finally got a test and it was 242, not great but not too horrible either. Hopefully just a virus that is causing problems with the blood sugar too.

I know the DIS isn't the best place but need to know if I should keep after DH to do what I think he should ;)

He has Diabetes Type 2, takes medication for it but doesn't do any other control measures. Tells me he tests his blood sugar but I don't think he does.

He's feeling bad, sick to his stomach and very thirsty. I know enough about Diabetes to know these could be a sign his blood sugar is out of whack.

Do I keep nagging and watch him do a blood sugar check? What should it be for me to insist we make a trip to ER? He doesn't have a good track record of taking good care of himself and sometimes waits for a crisis instead of taking care of himself like he should.

I believe that the person with diabetes should be the one to manage their healthcare needs, but your dh sounds like my parents who aren't proactive.

Would you consider doing the finger pricking/monitoring for him? I also think you both should get some diabetes education for dietary needs and to get a refresher on how to monitor his glucose levels. I would take the team approach - with you being on his team.

I had gestational diabetes and I was scared to prick my finger, but got used to it and I also had a hard time giving myself insulin, but my dh helped. Sometimes you just need someone to hold your hand and/or someone to walk you thru... :wizard:

I had to switch to insulin while I was pregnant, and I used to get the biggest kick out of my DH when I was doing the injections. He would grimace and frown just watching me. I told him to stick with her present career - health care would not be the place for him. :teeth:

Please convince him to give it one more try - my husband is insulin dependent also. I can not watch him inject but depending on the blood sugar level, he must before each meal and before bedtime. We recently heard about the new nasal pump which will come on the market in the US next month. His doctor is waiting to see if this will work for him. We hope so!
Diabetes is such a complicated disease - hubby has to monitor his feet, vision etc.. for diabetes related complications. Too many things to leave to chance. Hope you can convince him of the possible severity of it.
