DH's ex girlfriend causing problems

My husband recieved a call from his grandma last night, and apparently there are bill collectors calling her and looking for his ex-girlfriend from 12 years ago. Apparently she is running up some sort of bills and listing my DH as her husband and gave my GMIL's phone number as a contact number for the 'happy couple'.

We've check DH's credit report and there is nothing on it that is unusual. He's never co-signed anything for her. They aren't calling for him, they are just looking for her and he was listed as her husband.

I guess my question is: Is there anything we can/should do?

We have no idea where she is. He hasn't seen her in 10 years. They won't say what these debts are for since they aren't DH's. I just don't want this to come back and haunt us, but I really don't know what can be done.

Have your husband contact the credit bureaus (all three)and add a notation to the credit report that no credit is to be opened in his name, until he is contacted and his information is verified by him first. They will also note for him that it has recently come to his attention that an ex-girl friend his been using some of his personal information to possibly obtain credit. I would also contact the authorities to report this. This way you have all our bases covered.

Also, did you check all three major credit bureau's reports. Just because it isn't on one, doesn't mean it is isn't on the others. The best place for to get a full credit report and true credit report is through www.myfico.com.

I believe this is a criminal offense and your dh should probably talk to someone about this. It is fraud and I would think that is against the law.

I agree that it's fraud, and she should be busted. There's no telling how many other people she's tried to rip off. At the very least, he needs to put a fraud alert on his credit report so that she doesn't manage to open any accounts with his name on them. I'd also try to contact the police in the town where she lives.
