DHs--did you like the cruise more than you expected?

About a week after we got home from our 4 night DCL MAGIC cruise in 1999 my DH said that he had a "much better time than he expected." I asked why we went if he did not expect to enjoy it and he said he did it because he knew I wanted to go. (so romantic!! !!)

How many other DHs did not think they would enjoy the cruise as much as they actually did?

It was definitely my idea to book our first DCL cruise. My hubby kept saying "what can I do for 4 days on a ship....I'll be bored". Well, that was on the Maiden Voyage of the Magic back on July 30, 1998. We have since done five DCL cruises (2 Eastern) and will be going on our first Western on 8/3.

Yes, he definitely liked it more than he thought he would!

My DH also admitted that he liked the cruise much more than he expected. He went with Disney because of me. Needless to say, we are planning another cruise for next year with the kids. He is another convert.

Our 1st cruise was also in'99 ( 4 day ), my DW and I are both Disney fanatics so I figured on having a good time. While still on the cruise we both decided 4 days was not enough, so I suggested a 7 day cruise for a 25th anniversary, which we did in Jan of this year.
I have now decided 7 days is not long enough !!! LOL

The Disney brand name was the only thing that convinced my DH to try a cruise...well, that plus the fact that it was only three days long. I was dying to try a cruise, but he was totally uninterested. It's not hard to figure that we liked it a LOT more than he thought...it's been 23 Disney cruises and 4 on RCCL, including his "dream trip" (a cruise to Alaska last year). But after going to a cold place, he says that he is sticking to the warm destinations now!

Yes, I liked it more than I expected - thing is, I expected a lot!

And besides that , the Disney cruises were MY idea!

I surprised my family with a 7-day Disney cruise last year and they were thrilled. We all had a wonderful vacation. I am a compulsive planner and am designated as the families official vacation thinker-upper and planner.
I had a pretty good idea what we were in for, based on my extensive research and countless (ok, not countless - actually 869 of them!) posts to
this board. I had also been on 5 cruises before. So why did I like this cruise more than I expected?

- The Disney Magic is the nicest ship I have sailed on (which includes the S.S. Norway)

- The food was WAY better than I expected. When I think of Disney, I think of kids - when I think of kids I think of pizza, hot dogs, etc. But the lobster, escargot, veal and rack of lamb were all amazing!

- The stateroom was the largest I've had, even though I have been in higher 'categories' on other ships. This year we will be in a suite and I can't wait!

Tell your DH that you don't have to be a Disney lover to love a Disney cruise - you just have to love your family.

Personally, I love 'em both and can't wait for our 2nd Magic cruise in October.

My dh went on the 1st cruise (Rhapsody, to Hawaii from Vancouver) because it was our 25th anniversary and I had said that is what I wanted to do from the day we were married. He really wasn't sure what he would do for 12 days but since I was so excited about it he went. Well it turned out that he really enjoyed himself. We have now gone on the Disney Wonder (Jan. 01) and to Alaska on the Regal Princess (May 01) He is looking forword to going on another one someday soon (I hope).

I will be the first to disappoint this theory.


But not in the way you think! After being involved in the heavy research on here, and being involved(not equally; I let her take the lead, just to avoid any confusion) in the planning of the trip, I went knowing full well what to expect, and wasn't disappointed in the least! I think if anything I surprised my DW in how accepting I was on the whole deal, and how quickly I took to the whole adventure. There wasn't even a glimmer of thought of how the other males have reacted sofar in the idea of being bored. Our personal itinerary since the first one is to try and go once a year, if possible.

We just returned from 7/6 Western and dh agreed to, but I don't think he really expected to have a great time, really did it for me and the dd's. Well he was the one who insisted that we re-book another one for 2004 before we left the ship. Said it was his best vacation ever!!!

and not that she is a DH but my mother had huge concerns about going (she had been on numerous, adult only, small cruises) and she was thrilled when we got off and I fully expect that she may join my daughter and I again.

My husband was not as excited before our first cruise, and I got the feeling he agreed to go just because he knew how badly i wanted to go. All it took was one cruise, and now he is hooked for life. It was a lot different than what he expected i think, and now he always tells me to go ahead and book another one once we get home...

I really wanted to go on the cruise and DH just tagged along . While on board he added on DVC to double our points so we could cruise again! We are now going on our 2nd Disney cruise (and haven't even been to WDW or used our points anywhere else - DON'T GO THERE with me please - it's a personal choice! ) He has said he wouldn't do the Disney cruise without the kids and tells everyone it was great BUT he was "Mickey'd out" by the end of 7 days

Before our cruise, my hubby was excited but didn't know what to expect since he has never been on a cruise before. I have been on RCCL once and on the Magic once for a 3 day.
He was looking forward to the all you can eat part of it, but really didn't know much else. He wasn't thrilled about the Disney part of it, he just went on it because I told him they have larger staterooms (but I knew better, I knew he would love it)

Almost every day he would thank me for booking the cruise and would tell me how much he LOVED the cruise....on the final day at Castaway Cay he turned to me and said "Why don't you go talk to that woman about re-booking a cruise?" I almost fainted, this is the same man that just before we went told me no more big vacations for awhile since we just went to WDW in Sept 2001 (Honeymoon) and I am going again in December with my mom.

I ran right up and got a quote....we had to think find out if we could take the time off so unfortunatly we couldn't re-book right then and there, but I have already been in contact with my TA and we will be booking the Wonder 4-day for December 2003 in the next few weeks!!

On our first cruise my Dh went because I wanted to and the kids did. I was so afraid that he just would not like it or would not find enough to keep him occupied. I was very wrong. He loved it. He liked that you unpack once and are waited on for the rest of the trip. No worries and no cares. He also loves the variety of food. I am not a very adventurous eater so he gets to eat things I don't cook etc. He loves the lamb. We have just booked our 4th trip and he has loved everyone.

My DH L-O-V-E-D everything about the cruise. (He knew he would "like" it, but had no idea how much.)

He has already said that we need to do the Western in a couple of years!

I've been on other cruise lines and I like to cruise so I knew I would enjoy it. I liked it more than I thought because of the excitment I could see in my girls. They were thrilled every time they saw a charachter that they had not seen, when we went to a new place on the ship they had not been, when we stopped at an island that they had not been to, and many many more things. Although our kids have traveled quite a bit I have never seen them as excited as they were on this trip. Thats what made it more than I expected. It is fun as we are 2 months from our next trip to see them getting excited all over again.

I was the one who made all the plans for our 7/6 cruise. My DH and 2 kids didn't seem all that excited to go. But by the end of the first night my family was hooked. And my daughter was the one I was worried about the most. She was complaining that she would have no one to hang out with because she is shy. Well we hardly saw the kids all week. I couldn't believe that this was the same daughter that I had to practically force to join Common Grounds! Both kids loved coming home at 1 and 2 in the morning. My husband definitely wants to cruise again. It was like we had our own separate vacation from the kids. It was nice being with them but having adult time to ourselves was wonderful. Hopefully as soon as we can rack up enought points we will go again.

My DH enjoyed our 12/01 cruise MUCH more than he expected. We had only been on the ship a few hours when he kept asking me "We're going to do this again, aren't we?" This from a man I have to drag on vacation! We did the 3 night Wonder in case we didn't like it. HAH!! We're already planning for the 7 night Western for June 2004!

OUr cruise is still coming up so I can't say yet what my husband thought, but I can tell you that he has enjoyed the non-Disney cruises that we have taken in the past.

His comment regarding this upcoming trip is that he thinks it will be the best of both worlds. We will have plenty of family time with us and our two kids together. Then we will have some grown up time when our kids are in the club having fun and we can wander the ship as a couple. Then we will have some time all alone -- maybe when I am with other DISers and he is off doing his thing.

Sounds like a good idea to me.
