DH was rear-ended this morning

To say that there is always someone worse off was never so true as this morning.

I was on my way to do some Christmas shopping and DH was heading out of town. I told him to be careful because I had heard that the town he was headed to was due for some snow.

15 minutes later my phone rings and I know it's DH because of the ringtone. I'm thinking it can't be good because we just talked. I answer, he's really mad and tells me that someone just rear-ended him and his car was "messed up real bad."

It took me an hour to get where he was. By that time the car had been towed, the police said it was totalled. It doesn't appear that the other driver even tried to stop. The pavement was dry, it hadn't snowed yet and there were no skid marks. DH was in the left turn lane and the driver hit him so hard that the trunk was pushed against the driver's backseat.

Anyhow, I took DH to the ER and as bad as things are for us - injuries, a totalled car, dealing with the aftermath and insurance companies - the hospital staff said this was the fourth car accident that morning. Sadly, there had already been a fatallity by 10 in the morning.

We don't know the other family and they weren't involved in this accident. Even so, I just can't help but feel so sorry for them. I got to take my DH home, he'll heal, we'll find another car but another family goes home without a loved one and will be planning a funeral. :(

What a kind and thoughtful way of looking at your own misfortune.. It's a gift to have that kind of attitude..:goodvibes

Your DH will probably be pretty sore tomorrow - that's what usually happens when hit from the rear, so he may need some extra TLC.. So glad he wasn't injured badly - yet so sad for the other family..:(

Hopefully the insurance will take care of your car situation..

I'm so glad your DH is okay.

These kind of accidents seem to be more and more common. I don't see how people can not notice a car stopped in front of them. People just plow into the car, totally oblivious, not even attempting to stop.

Usually the back seat is the safest place to be in a car, but if there had been a child in your DH's back seat, I doubt they would have survived.

We have had two kids killed here recently in just that way. :sad1: (different accidents)

I also had a co-worker killed that way. She was sitting at a RED LIGHT, and someone rear-ended her going so fast that she was killed instantly. She was wearing a seat belt, but she was crushed from behind. :sad1: (it was a drunk driver, going 95 in a 30mph zone :mad::mad:)

It makes me nervous now to be stopped in my car. I'm always watching in my rear view mirror and thinking where I would go if someone barrels up behind me. :sad2:

And this just happened yesterday: an 18 wheeler plows into a school bus.

Same scenario - someone apparently not paying attention. How do you not see a big school bus with red lights flashing and stop sign extended. :confused3

Savoy's wife, Camilla Savoy, told KATC-TV that he told her he looked in his rearview mirror, saw the big rig bearing down on his bus and yelled to the children to brace themselves. He grabbed the steering wheel and managed to keep the bus on the road, Camilla Savoy said.

21 children injured, 2 seriously. :sad1:

Sorry, I kind of went on, but I always thought of head-on collisions as the most serious. Getting rear-ended is usually not so bad, but it seems like it is now. People just don't pay attention when they are driving. :sad2:

No doubt if anyone was in the backseat they would have been killed. I saw the car from the parking lot of the tow yard. We couldn't go in to get his things because they were closed. But even from that distance it looked bad. His seat actually broke, that's just another example of how hard he was hit.

The other driver told DH he never saw him. The speed limit where he was hit it 50MPH. DH said he never heard brakes. He had looked to see if it was his turn to go and the very next thing he knew he was sideways across the 2 lanes of eastbound traffic. He was in the westbound lane when he was hit.

People just really need to be careful.

He's going to be so sore tomorrow. He thinks he's going to work on Monday but I'm not so sure. He does quite a bit of heavy lifting at his job. Plus, he's on a muscle relaxer and an anti-imflammatory. Not so sure that driving is advisable with those.
