Dh has interview for job in Orlando. I am freaking out. UPDATE post #32

Does he even want to work for a company that is pulling a bait and switch from the get-go? That would give me a HUGE pause. What if they keep changing things?

They're negotiating. He needs to not look desperate and stick with his counter. He shouldn't have gone so low. I'm sure what was advertised is what they are willing to pay.

Not really negotiating. She told him that this is what they want to pay now. He said it was too low. She said she was sorry to hear that and think it over and call her back if he reconsidered. He called and asked if they would consider coming up mid-way and she reiterated that she was sure her original offer was as high as they were willing to go but she said she would let the Mgr know. She was not very happy with them changing the salary after the posting either. She said it shouldn't have been advertised until they had the department budget finalized but they were eager to fill the position. He said that if they were willing to negotiate he was interested. She said "Thank you for your interest" and that was it.

I agree with Dawn M. I would be very hesitant to uproot my family for a company with bait and switch tactics.

Hopefully something better will come along very soon! :scratchin

OP - I'm sorry that the salary range was decreased after you and DH spent so much time with the excitement and all the "what ifs." We recently went through the same thing when DH interviewed at a company near MCO and he looked like a shoo-in until the last moment. We want to relocate to Florida and are hoping that DH will be able to find a job there soon. We're looking at Seminole County cause we like the schools there. I am lucky cause I work from home and have gotten the support from my company that I can relocate and continue to telecommute.

Yeah, this.

If it were just a low offer at first, but negotiation seemed reasonable, then I'd not be concerned... it's not unusual for companies to advertise the maximum possible pay scale, and try to pay the minimal possible salary; that's part of what the process is all about.

HOWEVER, this case is a little different, as I'm understanding the explanation. The manager just changing his mind on what he wanted to pay, and the relatively little willingness for discussion, is not what I'd consider a normal scenario at all.

Of course, I would not entirely count out the possibility, just keep eyes and ears open for other potential warning signs as any final details are discussed.

:thumbsup2

If they will change this, what else will they change by the time he gets there?

It seems odd not only that they suddenly changed their minds on salary, but that they offered him a position without even meeting him in person.:confused3

Ding Ding Ding. Get the brightest and best in there with a high offer, come up with a ridiculous story about someone changing their mind and lowball.

If they really want him they'll come back now having had some epiphany and offering him exactly what he called them back with, or likely a little bit lower.

It's a little sickening actually. I would strongly consider whether you are willing to move your entire life to a new state to work for a company that seems this sketchy.

Actually it isn't that unusual these days to be offered a job over the phone. When you are talking about someone with extensive experience in a specialized field, sometimes something just clicks between the resume and the actual phone interviews. It does save costs on flying someone out , especially if it is cross country, if they are well spoken over the phone and meet or exceed all expected critieria. Many of DH's friends in the same field have been hired via phone-only interviews.

I would be VERY hesitant to uproot my family for an job that was offered from a phone interview. I don't know any reputable companies that would offer someone a job without ever meeting the person!

No way would I consider working for that company.

That was pure bait and switch, not negotiating at all. Companies don't have to advertise a salary at all when they advertise positions. Most don't. That's story about the hiring manager changing their mind is BS.

They deliberately put down a higher figure than what they were willing to pay.

Eh, my first thought is that the recruiter is trying to keep the salary under a certain, predetermined threshold and is playing the "the darn Manager is changing the rules as we go and I'm really ticked about it" card. Who is going to call her on it? Nobody.

OP, tell DH to stick to his guns. He had such a huge positive response from this company, not once but TWICE, that if they really truly want him they'll make it happen. If they won't increase the salary to his request then this is not the right organization for your family.

Dh just got a call from the head of the department he would have worked for in Orlando. He just found out from HR what happened with the interview. He wanted to apologize to DH for the salary issue. He said he was out of the office for several days and was unaware that his Area Manager had changed the maximum salary for this position. Dh said the guy seemed genuinely sincere with his apology. He also said that the salary wasn't technically changed, just that the Area Manager decided that he wanted to spend less then originally intended. He said that he should have been consulted first since he is directly in charge of that department. As far as the position, so far, nothing has changed. The Dept head is trying to get the salary raised up some because the position warrants the higher salary. DH told the dept. head that he is still sending out resumes and not waiting around. The dept. head said he didn't blame him one bit since it was handled so poorly.

Never negotiate with HR. You need to talk to the hiring manager. Then you will know if it is BS or not. If the manager wants you then they will move the HR bureaucracy to get it done. Hope it works out for you.

I'm sorry for how they handled it but definitely stick to the salary that you want. You don't know what kind of raises are handed out later so going in at a salary that works for you is important. Good luck!

I completely agree. They would have not had time to do any sort of checks or references. They just offered by the seat of their pants? That wouldbe a huge red flag to me. Combining it with a salary switch? That would have completely made me turn it down. In this kind of job market a solid company take time to make hiring decisions.

I have to be honest. This sounds even sketchier. Especially from a company that didn't check any references. I'd run at this point.

They actually called his references before the interview, that's how we knew they were interested. And the company is very legit, they are a well-known company in business for more than 40 years. We just think there were a few in the office that dropped the ball and were less than professional. But that is neither here nor there because DH is moving on with the job search.

I'm sorry both you and your DH got your hopes up about the job and relocation, just to be let down. :( That stinks.

He'll find something better. :)

Sounds like it was CHANGED to me!

They can play around with semantics all they want, but the truth is, it was CHANGED!

Dawn
