He was supposed to have surgery in late July or August, but he got a lot worse last weekend. They put him in the hospital Wednesday and took him to surgery this afternoon. He came to the ICU around 7pm.

DH is heavily sedated--and I do mean heavily, like with Propofol. The nurse sent me home to try to get some sleep. DHs sister is staying up there tonight. My kids have not been able to see him yet, but they will go up tomorrow. I warned them about ventilator, chest tubes, and about a million IV lines.

The heart surgeon said his mitral valve was shredded and not working at all. It really is a wonder he didn't have some kind of event before this. The new valve is working perfectly and his heart is going well. It will be a long recovery. DH has been so sick for so long; he has no immunity and no reserve stamina. But he's a fighter and we have hope that he will eventually feel better.

thats good news , you need to just hang out on the dis awhile before you go to sleep, to unwind a bit

Lots & lots of good thoughts for quick extubation & easy recovery for him, Minky. Keep us updated.

Minky, really hope this will be the path toward his getting stronger and able to enjoy a better quality of life. Positive thoughts to him and a hug to you.

Sending prayers and wishes for a full recovery for your DH and for strength for you and your family.

Prayers for a quick recovery and strength and peace for all of you!!

Thanks, ya'll. I think I'm going to take something to help me sleep. The house is too quiet and my brain is too wired. Forgive me for posting and running, but I think I just need to hit the pillow.

So glad to hear the doctors acted before your DH had a major cardiac event. Hugs, prayers and pixie dust for a smooth recovery and better quality of life for your DH.

Maybe you will see significant improvement with the new valve. Keeping him in my prayers.

Minky, your family is always on my prayer list but sending a few extra for quick healing and strength for DH and you as well.

Get some rest, you need it too.:hug::hug:

Your husband and family are in my prayers. Last July I had open heart surgery to repair my mitral valve that the doctor had been watching for 12 years. It failed suddenly. I don't have any memory of the first 48 hours or so. The recovery was not fun. Coughing and sneezing was very painful because of the sternum incision. There is an up side. We were able to make our previously scheduled October trip to Disneyworld with my granddaughter and family. We had a great time and I am enjoying my new lease on life. I hope your husbands recovery brings him a new supply of health and energy.
