kitty litter! :confused3

What do you do with your kitty litter? This morning, on my way out to work, knowing Dh was going to the dump, I emptied the kitty litter box. I put it in a plastic grocery bag, put fresh litter in the box, and put the grocery bag in the back of DH's truck, and went to work.

DH told me tonight, the guy who works at the dump yelled at him for dumping kitty litter. Dh was confused, and asked what was he supposed to do with it...the guy says "bury it in your yard" So, Dh looks around, and says "I don't see anywhere that says kitty litter is not acceptable to dump here."

What was the big deal? OMG! I am not going to dig a hole in my yard everytime I clean out the litter box. I am not going to dump the litter in the woods. I will continue to bag up the kitty litter on days DH hits the dump, and I will dispose of it that way.

In case you are wondering the same thing I did "Why was the guy inspecting our trash?" DH said the guy was giving him some help with getting the bags out of the truck.

:confused3 Ours goes in our trashbag too. We have trash pickup, but it goes to the dump, so ???

I know there are certain things you're not supposed to dump, but I didn't think kitty litter was one.

Heaven forbid you put anything biodegradable in the dump (or landfill). I never understood why leaves, grass clippings, and sticks were going to be banned from landfills in Ohio. You would think that they would want that sort of stuff. And kitty litter is just clay. Well, I suppose used kitty litter has more than clay in it.

Who knows??? :confused3

I guess we'll be seeing you on the 11 o'clock news.

:confused3 We bag ours up in the litter box liners & in the trash it goes.

Who knew? :confused3

You mean all you cat owners don't have holes in your backyard where you bury it? :teeth:

There is actually a type of kitty litter that is flushable though the brand name escapes me right now. You just scoop the poop and flush it. Very convenient. Right now we use a non flushable kind though. I put mine in a Walmart bag and put it in the dumpster too. I never knew you weren't supposed to do that.

I couldn't dig a hole if I wanted to. My ground is frozen. :rotfl2: The flushable we were told is not safe for our septic or I would be using that.

my mom told me that when kitty litter is dumped, it needs to be double bagged ( then inside the trash bag) in a similar manner to diapers. I think the problem is with the possibilty of diseases that could be contracted through the waste.

Just train your cat to go on the toilet and this won't be a problem anymore. :rotfl2:

Our back yard overlooks a steep hillside and our neighbors used to dump their litter down the hill. But the hill overlooks a sidewalk and a road. :crazy2:

We found out the hard way that flushable kitty litter isn't flushable. It was designed and tested as such using older bathroom fixtures. Over the last 20 years, most states have passed laws restricting water flow through bathroom fixtures, so much so that so-called "flushable" kitty litter no longer flushes. We have to dispose of it in the trash.

It is an extremely BAD idea to bury it in your yard. First, you'll eventually run out of yard.:rotfl: Second, it will attract vermin and feral animals. Third, it could become a hazard to children in the neighborhood if they dig it up, for "fun".

We use Swheat Scoop litter. It's supposed to be flushable, and I did do that for a while at our apartment with no problems, but now in our house we just throw it away. I'm not 100% comfortable flushing it.

It's made from wheat and is biodegradable--unlike clay litter. It's fabulous stuff; doesn't have added perfumes and there isn't a giant cloud of dust when I pour it out. We really don't have odors unless the kitties forget to cover their poop.

But you should find out exactly why the dump won't take kitty litter. It may be what the cats put in the litter and not the litter itself.

Who would ever think to bury litter? And what do you do with it in the winter when the ground is frozen? Store it in the garage and then dig a huge crater in your yard after everything thaws?

When I kitty-sit my DSIL's cat, I put the dirty little into a plastic grocery bag and put it into the garbage can. They have curbside garbage pick-up, so it just goes out with the rest of the garbage. I don't believe her garbage people inspect what's in the garbage can, unless it's something pretty obvious, like oil or paint cans, which we have a special collection for every so often in my town.

I'm not sure why the dump guy had a problem with organic waste going into the dump.

Sounds like the guy at the dump is on a power trip. We call the guy at our dump "The Dump Nazi" because he is always giving us a hard time about what we can and can't do and where stuff goes. I don't have a cat but if I did I couldn't "bury" the litter in our yard because it is frozen solid right now. When I clean up after the dogs that goes in a plastic bag inside the regular trash a couple at a time so no one will notice. :teeth:

so when I pick up our dog left overs........I put them in a bag and on Mondays the trash pick up comes and out it goes.......ARE dog left overs bio-degradable.?????
