DH buying me a Canon Rebel ...which lens??

I've had my XT for one month, and am enjoying "The Kelly" ;) (sigma 18-125) as a great walk around lens! :thumbsup2

btw, I got it used on eBay - excellent condition, looks like new!

btw, if you are ultra-amateur like me, you may enjoy one of the books written for the XT. I have "The Digital Rebel Digital Field Guide"; got it for about $12 on Amazon. Has both XT user tips/instructions (like an extended manual) and general photography tips. :thumbsup2

I too have the Kelly lens. The funny thing is that PoohJen beat me out for the auction on ebay.

It's a great lens and can't wait to take it to WDW next month. :thumbsup2

i didnt' buy the Kelly due to my shaky hands but love  my canon 28-135 IS...and i picked up a used 18-55mm kit lens on ebay( tons of them there) for the occasional wider angle ... so far so good...oh and i also got the 50mmf1.8 which i like too...but your said "one"... hahaha that will be the day :lmao: i'm already saving pennies for the longer( think it's 70-300) IS zoom

the only con with the 28-135 is it's hefty...so far it hasn't been a problem and hope it stays that way( and pack mule husband is willing to carry it if it does get heavy)...the Kelly is a few oz lighter( maybe 4?)

I have "the Kelly" too... and it's on my camera 90% of the time as a walk around lens :)

And *yay* on the new camera Jackie!! :cool1:

Thanks guys!!! Paul (DH) decided that we will go with the canon 28-135 IS ... because of the IS!!

Will this be a good lens for taking shots of night shots and fireworks?? Anyone have the Sigma 28-200??

We love taking pics so we're jumping in with both feet!!

I have an older Sigma 28-200 that I used with my film Rebel for years. I was very happy with that lens, but it couldn't be re-chipped or upgraded to work with my Digital Rebel, so I bought a Kelly.

Keep in mind Jackie, on a Canon Digital Rebel, 28mm is not very wide angle. You might love the IS on that 28-135, but you may be cursing the fact that the lens just doesn't back off enough to get decent wide-angle shots like the 18-55 kit lens that will come with your Rebel. It's the big difference between 18 and 28 that have inspired so many people to buy the Kelly lens, even though it isn't a Canon brand and doesn't have IS capability.

not that i've used it all that long( like 2 week sor so ;) ) but i really haven't found the 28 to be that bad, a few times I have needed back up 2-3 paces then it's fine...now if i were on the edge of a cliff..or in the middle of a wdw crowd...big problem... :teeth: so i'd use the 18-55

ahandy tool to see the difference is here

Sensors on digital SLR's are a different size than film. Because of this it effects how the image is seen. This is known as a "crop factor". 28mm on a digital Canon SLR is the equilivent of 45mm on a Canon film SLR. It is not enlarged, it is croped. The 28mm is still 28mm, if you take a picture with a film SLR at 28mm, make it 4"x6" then crop it a bit on your computer and make that into a 4"x6" you'll get the picture that the digital SLR will produce.

This is why for digital SLR's it is strongly suggested you should have a zoom lens that starts at 18mm. For Canon that includes the 18-55mm kit lens, Sigma's 18-125mm lens, Canon also makes a few others in the 18-??mm range that are more expensive but have a faster aperture.

me too!!!

i got mine for mother's day and have not had alot of time to use it other than a point and shoot camera.
i would REALLY love to learn more about it, but i'm not good at reading the directions and putting it to use! i'm more of a hands person. i wish i had someone who could teach me how to use it and explain it to me in language i can understand. i had a minolta 35mm and learned how to use that, but this one seems way more complicated!

also on a side note: what's the kelly lens everyone talks about? where can i look at it?

thanks !!

I like 28-135mm with the IS, it is still my favorite and wide enough for my shooting style...
