Are there any alternatives to having a dessert party the night of your wedding? I would like to have mine as a welcome party, but what could I do that would be special (and included in the minimums) the night of the wedding? I thought maybe dinner somewhere (as it will be a morning/brunch reception), but would this be included? What else can be included?

Great post! I'm having the same issue...want something on the wedding night, but the possible cancellation of Wishes at my dessert party is def. a possibility (Mine is currently at Sago Cay)

Please help!

Maybe an after party. Depending on the time of your wedding and reception you could rent a ballroom and do some dancing later that night. Or do a thank you dinner.

We're going to invite all of our guests to join us at the Magic Kingdom that evening after our wedding. We know some might be running to catch evening planes to get back for work and school, but most will be staying the night and we want to show them Wishes, but don't want to spend the money on a dessert party. I will say that we are only providing tickets for our parents and wedding party. (2 of our brothers)

I am in the same situation.

I really wanted a dessert party, but when we calculated how much it would cost with 20 ppl, tax, service, and rental charges, it came close to $1000. Since we are having a big at home reception (even though most of it is covered by our parents) we probably cannot afford this.

Right now we do not know what to do. We can have anywhere from 8-23 people attending. If there is more than 10 (which I think there will be) we really want to try and find a special "treat" or activity for our guests that costs less.

Any suggestions???

See this is where I'm having a problem...

I do not mind the cost of the food for people, but Illuminations is not what it once was and I cannot justify paying the $13 viewing fee for my guests! You are talking like 600-700 just for that!

So we are thinking Sago Cay at the GF...but then we were told that the MK could changes the time of Wishes that day! So paying all that money for some dessert....I am having a hard time digesting that.

So what to do with a group of 40-50 that would be relatively inexpensive??? I would love to go to the MK after, but not everyone has tickets.

So please HELP!

I am in the same situation. My fiance tells me "I have a hard time paying $1,000 for cake and icecream..." But, he says he'll do it if I really want....which I do. But, I would prefer to find something else a little more reasonable. He's gone with everything I've wanted so far....I don't want to push it.:rolleyes1

I'm anxiously waiting to see if anyone else has ideas....

Instead of doing a separate Dessert Party why not hold your reception at one of the resteraunts from which you can see the fireworks? Either Ohana, Narcoosees, or Cali Grill, then everyone can just go outside to watch after dinner, and it will be a nice g'night send off. :) ANd you can do casual at Ohana or fancy atr Narc or Cali Grill

Here are two ideas we are thinking of right now:

1) I heard that it is possible to use Hurricane Hanna’s Grill and Shipwreck Beach at the Yacht & Beach Club (which I think I read in Passporters wedding guide). This could be fun if you could rent it at night and just have drinks and snacks and hang out....I wonder if you can see fireworks from there??? If anyone has info on this...please let me know!!! (prices, food options, etc).

2) We could easily do a breakfast instead, (like a welcome breakfast) which would cost much less. Depending on how many people we have, we could do the Grand gathering breakie at MK, or else maybe somewhere in the boardwalk area since we are staying at YC. In my opinion, we may be getting more value for our money that way.

The other thing I was thinking was to make a later reservation at one of the MK hotels, and we could all gather on the beach after and watch the electrical water pageant. Our ceremony is at 2:30 though, so I am not sure if that will work.

Anyways, that it what I am thinking right now...I am still 11 months away and not officially booked, so I have lots of time to look for new ideas!

We are having a 10:00am ceremony at SBP and then the reception at the St. James in the Boardwalk with brunch being served. We should be done around 12:30 or so.... Afterward, we're just planning to spend the rest of the day with our families at MK or HS. But I think that a Dessert Party (or something in the evening) would be a nice finale to the day. Since we are already hosting a reception, I would like for it to be a little different. Who knows! We're staying in a 2-bedroom at Old Key West. I guess we could just invite everyone there to hang out... Most of our attendees aren't drinkers and we're going to have kids around, so we gotta keep it PG. ;)

I love the idea of watching Wishes on the beach (can't you have the Dessert Party at the Polynesian on the beach?) But, I heard you can't hear the music, which totally makes it for me....

Are you able to get space and watch the electrical parade at the GF or Poly? Like can they set something up like a campfire type thing?

DF isn't keen on the spending $1000 for desert and fireworks when you can go to the park, watch the fireworks, and go to the bakery or candy shop and get something for no more than $10/person! Makes sense to me...At one point he suggested Cirque Du Soliel tickets for everyone...Might be a nice way to end the day...
I think we're going to do this as a gift to my parents instead...You might want to look into group tickets...You might be able to get a deal that way...If you have Disney Visa, I think you get 20% off as well.
