I had a gold lame dress. I wore it for my 10th grade Homecoming dance. It would be totally hideous now but was way in style in 1988!! My prom dress I actually really liked. The top was strapless black sequins and the skirt was long and was an iridescent dark blue/black.

Is anyone else more freaked out that 1980's clothing is being called "vintage" :scared1:

I went to the prom in the early 80s. I don't know where you all get the neon and tafetta from? That was not in existance in the early 80s. We were all wearing those frumpy, cotton Gunne Sax dresses (the precurser to Jessica McClintock--she was designing for them). Mine was pink cotton with little flower all over it...GAG:scared: . Anyway, this neon and taffeta must have been more "late" 80s.

Gunne Sax was more late 70's and VERY early 80's around here. I went to prom in 82,83 and 84. 82 was the last year we saw the Gunne Sax dresses. 83 was the start of the huge taffeta dresses. The late 80's were more of the iridescent, short, street-walker style.

My taffeta dress was lavender and reminiscent of Princess Di's wedding dress, complete with HOOP skirt!

Did you put a "wanted' item on Craigslist?

If you're buying it without trying it on, don't go by size, go with measurements. Remember that the clothing industry keeps changing the sizing to keep us happy. There were at least two in the 90s that I noticed...one week I was a medium at The Limited, the next week I was a small. I wasn't feeling bad for myself b/c that was sort of fun (though it was so obvious) but a woman near me was already an XS, and had nowhere else to go at that store.

So a certain size now is NOT that same number in '80s sizes, and you will have to be sure the seller measures it accurately for you.

Yes -

I don't feel "vintage" :scared:

I hosted an 80's mystery dinner for DH's birthday last year and had to have an 80's prom dress, too. Walked into the junior dept of Dillards and bam! there they were, on every rack.

Found one on clearance (this was after prom season) for $14. Amusingly, my SIL also hit up Dillards and bought her gown on clearance there!

OMG

Mine almost looked EXACTLY like that!

Stop laughing!

It was "dusty pink" though. :rotfl: and had flowers around the ruffly part of the neck

I was 1988 :cool2:

Make it tea length and burgandy... you have my homecoming dress in 1983!

I wore hoops with my 1984 dress prom.... shudder!!!:scared1:

1985 prom- hand me down lavender formal long straight dress with spaghetti straps.

19986 prom-went all out. Royal blue satin double ruffle skirt with the top layer pulled up in places by satin flowers and trimmed in pearls. top was off the shoulders with the same flowers and pearls. full crinoline underneath. I saw how much trouble my friends had with the hoop skirts the yr before.

Your description of how dresses evolved is exactly like my HS in Michigan. Early nineties looked like they could go into strip clubs! ACK!

Did your lipstick match your dress? :rotfl:

Did the hoops match your dress? :rotfl:

Where your shoes dyed to match your dress? :rotfl:

I lived through the 80s and I don't feel vintage either. I AM NOT OLD PPL!:lmao:

At least not yet.

Sigh.....1985 Lavander off the shoulder ruffled sleeves with gobs of lace and taffeta...pulled up in the front to reveal more gobs of layered lace.
After looking at pictures years later, I vow to never wear lavander again:scared: I don't know what I was thinking but God I thought I looked good in that thing there. Surely my taste has changed

You KNOW they did! How could you even think they wouldn't! What would people have said if I didn't get the dyed to match shoes! I hate to think back, but I believe my lipstick AND eyeshadow matched.

Although I went to my prom in 1996, my dress was DEFINATELY 80s--white satin off the shoulder number with big yellow and lavendar flowers all over it, with a ruffly mid-calf length skirt. I think I wore it with a pair of white pleather Payless chunky-heeled sandals. I pulled my hair up with a lavendar banana clip (remember those?) and used enough Aquanet to create my own hole in the ozone layer. When I went to the afterprom party and tried to take my hair down, it stayed in place.

here si the dress I got my DD to wear for this halloween as an 1980's Pop Star Barbie using a prom dress and accessories I bought all new this year.

Awww - I could of gave her my dress - my mom hasn't been able to get rid of that thing!

She can't even give it away. Probably because it has a coating of Aqua Net on it and it's stiff as a board. :rotfl2:

Maybe I should save it for my DD?
I have a matching purse, too somewhere :scratchin Dyed at Fayva along w/ my shoes.

Guess I'll be going to mom's tomorrow. ;)

The earrings are perfect. If you have chunkier bracelets go with those. The eyeshadow needs to be pink and purple! LOTS of it. Probably the same reason I "forget" to put on eyeshadow now; I'm done with the whole process having overdone it in the mid eighties! I love the pics! You've done well!
