can anyone tell me about this hotel? I already have a reservation at Desert Inn and Suites and have a great rate but then heard about this one. It has free wifi and also free hot breakfast. Not as close but not too bad. They said it was 7-10 minute walk. Thoughts???

Well, if you already have a great rate I'd stay put. DP is a basic hotel, does the job, but nothing special. Pool is tiny. The breakfast was pretty ordinary (can't really remember the wifi sorry!) But it is further to walk, which I think is a downside.

In late August 2014, we had a two day stay at the Candy Cane Inn, followed immediately by 7 days at the Desert Palms. On earlier trips, we had almost always stayed at a hotel along Katella (usually either the Super 8 or the Quality), so we were used to walking to and from hotels. Until we stayed at the Candy Cane Inn, I never understood why people put such a high value on taking hotel shuttles or the ART busses. Now that I've experienced the Candy Cane shuttle first hand, I really appreciate it. The seven days we spent walking to the Desert Palms seemed unbearable at times, when compared to the convenience of the Candy Cane shuttle.

The Desert Palms offers both a Disneyland Passholder rate and a large discount for stays of 7 days or longer. By combining both discounts we got an excellent rate, although I was a bit annoyed at check-in to discover they had a $10/day resort fee and a $1/day safe fee which were not mentioned when I made my online reservation.

Breakfast was excellent by my standards: scrambled eggs, bulk oatmeal, sausage or bacon on alternating days. They also alternated fried potatoes with biscuits and gravy. Waffles from the waffle stations were very good, especially the flavoured batter (usually cinnamon, sometimes strawberry (I think?)). Very nice outdoor deck, although we prefer to eat indoors.

The large lobby is two stories high, which results in a maze on the second floor which is where we stayed. The main lobby elevator doesn't stop on the second floor, so it was necessary to use another elevator which required a circuitous route to our room. I did some reconnaissance on our second day and found a stairwell between the pool and front desk that lead straight to our room, so we used this much shorter route on subsequent days.

Wifi was free, but it was impossible to connect to it from our room. There were three shared computers in the lobby which I rarely had to wait for.

There was no Disney Channel which is a deal breaker for my two daughters. And, yes, I realize there is a certain irony in us sitting in a hotel room watching the Disney Channel, when we could instead be inside Disneyland going on rides and watching live shows.

There were two types of flavored ice water in the lobby which were nice (usually orange flavoured and lemon flavoured). We filled up water bottles with the water on the way to the parks.

All in all, an excellent stay.

Stayed there a couple years ago, I might have posted a mini review some time back. Nice enough hotel, but showing its age. Carpeting and fixtures seemed old. Remember hair and dirt between the bed boards. Walking through some halls seemed a little musty, it is a bigger hotel than it looks. Free (tight) parking, but pay for it in resort fee. Decent breakfast as already detailed, with pastries and donuts in addition to hot items. Orange juice, pineapple, coffee. We got a free upgrade from standard to a borrego suite which has a sunken living area, so I don't know how the smaller room would have been. The walk is basically right from the corner of katella and harbor, which is about as far as I would consider walkable. 7/11 right next door.

We really liked Desert Palms. I adore waffles so the make-your-own-malted-waffles were fabulous. :) Not every breakfast place has those in my experience, so breakfast there is already a step above.

The halls are odd, the rooms are strange. Oh well! Our normal room was gigantic.

It's rarely wins in our value sweepstakes (I have very complicated concepts of value LOL) but when it does come up the winner, we really like it. :)

We're staying at Desert Inn and Suites. I thought about Desert Palms, but I really liked the really short walk from DIS! I figure that their breakfast is iffy, but I have Denny's and IHop very nearby. I am paying less for our two room suite than I could find anywhere else...we needed two distinct sleeping areas, so DIS is working for us. But...I'm still looking around, just in case!!!

Stayed at Desert Inn last March, staying there again in September. Clean, quiet (I asked for and got top floor, as far forward as possible), nice front desk service. We're getting a great rate in September. Breakfast is of little importance to me; because I like to get to the gate 30 minutes before opening, sometimes it's not even open yet, and I'd rather grab a bottle of juice and a power bar anyway. The mornings I was able to take advantage of it, it was simple but fine-- cereal, yogurt, fruit, milk and juice does me just fine. They also have free WiFi.

The biggie for me was the closeness. I love it-- right across the street. Here's a picture from the DLR entrance on Harbor; the building with the tower on the right. I can see my room from here:

Don't know anything about Desert Palms, but for me, proximity's most important. I'd stick with Desert Inn.

There could be a lower rate at carousel. They have suites. There's a $20 off 5 days or more promotion.
