I know I'm not the most important thread in this forum, but I'm looking for others who are having trouble finding work and are depressed. I feel like I'm lacking as a father and husband. I'm very educated and have a decent work record, but seems like NO ONE wants to hire me. I have had GREAT interviews, but when I follow up each one says they don't need me right now. It's starting to really hurt me emotionally.

Anyone in the same situation? How are you dealing with it??

Right now I'm finding it VERY hard to be happy about my vacation in just over a week. I feel like I shouldn't be spending $$ or even going. I hope the trip makes me more refreshed and ready to work my butt off at my next job!!!

I'm not in the same boat as you. It took me a year and a half after graduating from college to find a job. I had to move 2000 miles away from home for this job. The issue? There are so many people looking for jobs that employers can be picky. It doesn't reflect on you as a person if they don't want you. I had several interviews where i blew them out of the water (I was told that by 2 companies) and I still didn't get the position because there was someone more experienced than me. When I used to work at the Disney store, people with masters degrees would come in looking for work. Times are hard, but don't give up. There's something out there for you.

I hope your luck turns around. That can be downright depressing.

I would try and use the vacation as a turning point. Maybe it will put a nice on your face, and when you return things will change for you and your family.

Are you sure the interviews have gone great? That seems to be the point where you hit the wall. My suggestion is to practice some interview questions with your wife or a friend. Let them hear how you're responding and maybe they'll have some advice for you. You might be surprised.

I always ask on the follow up what could I have done or said differently. They all say the same thing..."your interview went very well, but we don't need you at this time." The only thing I can think is that my salary requirement scares most of them off. They all ask what I had made at the past position and when I tell them you can see the look of shock. Normally I just say I understand every place is different, so salary is not set in stone.

What I feel my main problem is that I'm not entry level in my field(science) and I don't have a PhD, so I'm stuck. I have almost 10+ years of experience in the field but I'm pricey for my range. All the jobs I'd fit into want a MD to hire, so it's killing me!!

My husband started his own company about twelve years ago and one of the things he looks for when he interviews is the interviewee to tell him on his own what "he/she" can do for the company.

Just got back and feel better. I feel as though this is a new start. I already have been contacted by a few other docs and professionals about what I have planned. I also have paid to have a professional CV written, so I'm hoping that will help.

So, onto better and newer things!!! Chin up and let's keep fighting!!

It helped that a TON of other people visiting were all about talking hockey with me at random places!! I had on my Chara Winter Classic jersey and clearly got a lot of attention. Even Islander and Ranger fans wanted to chat it up!!

Just saw your post now Obsessed glad to hear things are feeling more positive. I was out 3 times in a 5 year span about 8 years ago including and entire year and I remember how poorly that felt.

OH one more thing Blackhawks 6-0 we'll see one of you in the Cup Finals ?

Happy you have a better attitude. Hopefully, things in the work area will turn out well.
My DH lost his job about 6 years ago. He worked in IT for the same co. for 23 years. Like you his pay scale was high and he was middle age. 2 strikes. Plus, since he was hired in the early 80's most of his training came from the company he was hired by. He was going for his associate degree when he was hired, and they insisted BEFORE they would hire him, that he drop out of college. They actually insisted he have a written document from the college saying he has withdrawn from classes. The reason companies are saying they aren't hiring him..... lack of college degree. hmmm...
He is now working retail and has recently become manager of his own store. BUT, it is about 1/3 of what he was making and the benefits are not even close. However, we have found peace with the fact that had he been employed at his previous job he would not have had the opportunity to:
drive him Mom back and forth from ther chemo & radiation for her breast cancer,
been there for me when I became disabled
been able to drive me to and from to visit my mom as she was dying
been able to drive me to and from when my Dad was dying.
been as involved in our youngest school activities, or her toddler years.

I know he still struggles with self esteem. But, I gently remind him, he didn't loose his job because he was drunk, or stole, or was using drugs, or didn't go to work, or did a bad job. He lost his job because of cooperate greed. He is a good man, father, husband, son, son-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, and friend. I would take that over others who can provide monetary things.
Remind yourself, cooperations are greedy. And, I would suggest look around are the people around you there for your occupation? My friend used to tell me, fake it til you make it. If I put a smile on my face, eventually, even I would feel it.

I was laid off of work in July of 2011. I was at the company for almost 15 years. I was devastated when it happened. I started putting out resumes almost immediately. There was nothing out there.
Finally, after the beginning of this year I was called out to several interviews and was offered a couple positions. I chose the best offer, it was only 10 minutes from my home.
If is frustrating and maddening. I know exactly how you feel - but there is hope.

Well.... still looking. Down-er still, but on the up side.....back to Disney!!! After this trip I'll be busting my @ss for a full time position!
