Deposit nightmare

It just doesn't pay to be Canadian! I've been juggling and changing my reservations 3 or 4 times already because of discounts that have become available. However, what they didn't warn me about was that the original deposit would be credited back, and a new debit at the lower rate would be charged. Sounds reasonable, except I lost $25 in the exchange rate. Then they did it a second time (I went from rack rate to fan rate to entertainment rate). I had even anticipated something like this and asked specifically if any change would be made to my original deposit, and was told no. (I would have instructed them to leave it at the higher rate). Anyway, to make it even worse, I have a second reservation that has had no change to it, but they debited me another nights deposit, then credited it back right away (their error), but I'm loosing another $25 in the exchange rates.

Sorry, I'm just venting now! I know I can't complain too loudly because I did get some great rates, but still, I am somewhat disappointed at the whole thing, considering they told me no changes would be made.

E. Jane, why would a change in ressies cause an exchange rate loss? Sorry, but I know nothing about exchange rates!

Makes no sense to me either but for some reason, when I was paying in US $, I was charged 1.6177. On the credit side, they use 1.55. I guess buying and selling is not the same!

I know it's not a lot of money, it's just annoying considering I was told something different, and two of the transactions weren't even my doing!

Did you pay by credit card? Could you talk with them about it? It doesn't seem fair that you should lose money that is just being used for reserving a room. Perhaps you could talk with the manager of the hotel & find out whats going on. Also would someone at your bank be able to advise you want to do? It really seems unfair, especially when you were told that the change would not affect the exchange rate. Have you run into this before? How can you lose $25 if no money is actually exchanged? What if you just cancelled the whole darn ressie. Would they charge you for not staying at the hotel at all?

Jane - I emailed guest services at Loews and explained my situation. I explained that I could understand the changes made to the ressie that had all the rate changes, but was disappointed at being told something different on the phone. I also explained I was somewhat concerned about the change on the other ressie that was their mistake that was costing me money.

I got a phone call this afternoon from them. They were very understanding, and while there was nothing they could or would do about the ressie where the rates had changed, they were more than willing to credit me for their error if I faxed them my visa statement.

To be honest, I felt like a real letch - here I am getting 50% off rack rate, and I'm whinning about a few dollars! I told him I didn't write to demand a credit, but out of concern that things were showing up on my credit card that shouldn't have been there in the first place - I was merely seeking assurance that this would be the end of it. He was extremely nice, and told me if I ever have another concern, to call him back personally and he'd take care of it immediately. I'm happy enough with that. They gave me a break on my rates which will save me approximately $1,500 Canadian, so I guess I'll swallow the $75 and chalk it up to a learning experience. ( But no more than that! LOL!)
