Dentist Question - Came up on Instagram

Closed. That after I had them open while getting a filling done and a piece of tooth flew into my eye.

This must have been awhile ago. I can’t remember the last time the dentist didn’t insist on eye coverings. Never dark glasses like have been mentioned but they do offer regular plastic safety glasses. I just keep my own regular glasses on and they’re fine with that.

Mostly open, but I close them sometimes because I don't want them thinking I'm screaming at them with my eyes.

I've never had eye protection suggested at the dentist. I've only had basic cleanings in recent memory, though, maybe it's different when drilling is involved.

I wondered this myself after my last cleaning. I always have my eyes closed. I wondered if this was normal or if I was a weirdo.

Always open. Honestly never occurred to me to close them.

They are just dark tinted wrap around sunglasses it’s so the light needed to do the work doesn’t bother their eyes and it also is for safety so nothing gets in the eyes while they are working.

I wear glasses and I always take them off during dental procedures for the same reason I close my eyes, stuff flys out of my mouth while they are working and makes my glasses dirty. Or the frames get in the way of the Dentist or assistant working. Never had a Dentist offer eye protection for a patient. My current Dentist did start using a face shield during the pandemic for them and their assistant, but not anymore.

Sounds relaxing, and shouldn’t be a problem, as long as you sleep with your mouth open.

Well, I worked graveyard shift (11 pm to 7 am) for 25+ years so my bedtime was 9 am. My Dentist appointments were always on Friday at 9 am, so between it being my bed time, and being the end of the work week, I was REALLY tired whenever I was a the Dentist.

Interesting. Never heard of it. I have an appointment next month, I'll ask. But really no point because if I was concerned I would just keep my regular glasses on. But I don't because when I have, they always get bumped and smudged by the Dentist working in mouth. I guess it could work if the safety glasses don't extend out from your face like regular glasses do.

EDIT: Apparently the CDC does recommend patients wear eye protection during dental procedures. I will have to consider that. Although I guess some the past 3 years have questioned CDC recommendations on other health issues.

SECOND EDIT: I just went to my Facebook page and first thing I see if a friend at the Dentist getting two crowns and he is wearing wrap around sunglasses!!!

Eyes open. The one time I needed a filling, they gave me headphones to block out the sound of the drill, etc.

Sometimes open, sometimes closed. Depends on what is being done and my comfort level at the moment. Sometimes I close my eyes to try to relax and zone out.

Just because someone with absolutely no medical training questioned it doesn't even come close to mean CDC were wrong. Most of the problem has been with Covid and a pandemic like that hadn't happened in over 100 years when the Spanish Flu showed up, so there was not a whole lot of hands on experience with it.

Crowns make more sense for eye protection. there is a lot of grinding of existing teeth to make a Crown fit and pieces do fly.

Oh, I agree 100%, which is an opinion that got me flamed here many times in the past 3 years.
