Dental question

My DD7 lost her two, well not front-front teeth, but the ones on either side of her two front teeth, like 4 months ago. No signs of her adult teeth broken through.

At her last dental appointment, shortly before those fell out, she had X-rays. If she was missing those adult teeth, they would have noticed it then, right?

I’m sure they would. All three of my kids adult teeth took forever and a day to come in. One of DS’s took nearly a year. My oldest had to have a chain put on one to help pull it down in order to get braces. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

They probably would have said something if the adult teeth weren't showing on the X-ray, but I wouldn't worry about it. Just make it a point to ask the next time you go for a visit. A year ago my son had X-rays that showed he was missing 2 adult teeth. Dentist said it's not that uncommon, and that sometimes the gaps will fill in on their own by the surrounding teeth. We just had another X-ray this year and now they are saying only 1 adult tooth is missing! So either the other one just grew in late, or they missed it somehow on the X-ray.

I have a very small mouth and don't have all my adult teeth either (had them pulled actually because of crowding.) A full set of teeth is not actually necessary and depending on the size of your mouth may not even be needed.

Yes they would. It's part of their job to check. Missing adult teeth happens often. I'm the first generation to have all my adult teeth, yet 2 of my adults haven't come down and I have 2 upper baby K9 teeth still in place.

Got a lower premolar pulled recently because it had 2 root canals and was infected again. Can't go implant because it's too close to the jaw nerve. So right now I'm toothless. Yet you can't even tell or see it because I have small teeth and a small mouth. Trying to decide what to do.

Back to the kids: DS's upper front teeth grew right away. Lowers took 2-3 months. DD's upper front teeth took 3-4 months where her lowers were right away.

DD is missing those exact teeth (adult teeth). Yes, as long as the xrays taken were of that section of the mouth, it would show (or not show) that the teeth are missing. Presumably the teeth fell out naturally, which usually means the adult teeth are close. If the baby teeth were knocked out by an accident/fall, the adult teeth could still be far up into the bone and not visible. If you are concerned, call the dentist to be sure, but coming in slowly isn't usually a worry to them.

Thank you all! I have a tendency to be a worry wart and I appreciate your reassurance!

It is fine, as others have said, if something was wonky they would have seen it on the x-ray and told you.

My younger son’s front teeth never came down. Turns out, there wasn’t enough room for them to come down. They were blocked by other teeth.

He ended up having to go to an orthodontist who stretched his upper jaw to make room for his two front teeth to drop.

It worked in a few months.

If she lost her 2 the normal way, her adult teeth are there. That's why they get loose in the 1st place... from the permanent teeth coming in.

I had one tooth that never came in on it’s own. I lost the baby tooth as normal but the adult tooth was stuck in the palate and never came down on its own. When I got braces they put a spacer in to make room for the tooth and then the oral surgeon attached a chain to my tooth that the orthodontist adjusted each visit to bring it down and into place.

my son had a similar situation, I don't remember how long it took but I know it was over a year because I brought it up at at least 2 dental visits. They were able to tell on the xray that there were teeth waiting to grow in.

Took over a year too. My son actually had to get a couple of other baby teeth pulled to make room for the others to come in. The dentist decided that after looking at the xrays. It still took a while even after that. Lol. One of them just finally started poking through. Dentist said the other one is on its way (can be seen in an xray). The dentists are definitely looking at all of that when your child is there.

My 7 year old daughter lost those two teeth and the two bottom outer teeth almost a year ago. The top two have finally started coming in this month. No sign of the bottom two yet. She's been rather toothless for the past 18 months. The top center teeth took 9 months to finally start growing in.

When my son lost those teeth they took forever to come down. The dentist said they could do something to bring them down, but we just waited, and eventually they came down fine.

I think I may be able to offer some information that will both reassure you and give you more concern. Those particular teeth are very crucial teeth to the structure of the teeth overall. Because of that I believe the dentist would be more likely to note developmental details shown in the x-rays regarding them.

One of my daughter's inherited a hereditary trait where those teeth are undersized and fully grown they are tiny slivers, small even for baby teeth. We had to address the situation before her orthodontic work could begin during middle school. At that point it was determined that bonding would be the first line of treatment. No one looking at her can tell what you see is not her actual teeth in those two spots. She's in college now and purely for cosmetic reasons our dentist is considering switching her to veneers because it's become very difficult to keep the bonding white enough long-term.
