I used my AXP frequent flyer miles in getting a rd trip ticket. I would like to change but don't want to pay the $150 fee to do so. I'm seeing another flight connection flight leaving earlier so I was wondering if anyone has ever had success moving onto another flight while at the airport? I checked the earlier flight and it appears it has seats available and was thinking of showing up (45 minutes before taking off) and seeing if they would board me?

You would be subject to Delta's policies and fees around same-day travel changes. Basically you can request the change starting three hours before the flight you want to switch to and the charge will be $50. Better than a $150 change fee, but not free.

Watch out for time changes. I have taken advantage of that on award tickets. I had a flight last year that left Orlando at 12:30pm. I really wanted something later but that was the latest for miles. They changed the flight to 11:30am. I called and said it was not acceptable, we had breakfast reservations that morning. I asked about a 6:30pm flight that was still available and they moved us to it for free.

Call Delta to find out if you have to be at the airport to be on the standby list or not...if you have to be there, plan to be there 3 hours before to end up closer to the top of the list..

:thumbsup2

I have to wait 90 minutes in Atlanta for my connecting flight so I don't have three hours. I plan on calling Delta to see if they would change my flight. It has already changed once last month but I accepted the new time. If they still insist on charging me then I will request to see if I can get stand by on earlier flight.

Delta will not let you standby unless you are an elite with Delta. Your options are change the flight or do same-day confirmed for $50.

I'm really glad American still allows date/flight changes for no fee on award tickets, as long as the arrival and departure airports don't change!

As mentioned, your best bet is to hope for another flight time change and then ask for the flight you want.

Well some great news! Not only did I change my flight for an earlier time (at no cost) but I gained back 10,000 of my mileage! Very happy camper here! :cool1:

How did you manage that? Inquiring minds want to know.

Well I called Delta and just said the new schedule does not fit. I told the Customer Service Rep that I would like to change my flight on the way down but I wanted to keep my return trip. I was on hold quite a while (he said the computers were slow:surfweb:) but I was extremely polite on the phone and asked how his day was going etc. When I checked on the Delta site for my schedule my skymiles went up another 10,000 points!

Did they change your flight so that was the "new schedule"? I have FF mile tickets booked for April and would like to change the outbound flight. I figured I'd have to pay the change fee.

Yes. I was originally scheduled to leave Grand Rapids MI (12PM) arrive in Atlanta (2:15PM) and then land in Orlando at (4:55PM). Now I'm leaving Grand Rapids at 10:20AM arriving in Detroit at 11:17AM and then landing in Orlando at 2:55PM. This fits way better for me as my family is using another airline which arrives same day in Orlando at 3:00PM. Also we might be able to avoid some 5PM traffic in Orlando but more importantly get us into MK!!!
