Delta seats

So I'm bummed about the SW bday sale that I've been waiting 2 months for! My flights are not included. But I checked Delta this morning and they have a flight that will work for $98!!! My question is do I get to choose seats when I purchase Delta tickets? Will I have the same SW/AT seating issues? Thanks!

Delta lets you choose seats but there are some seats (exit row, some seats toward the front) that you may pay a fee for. It will tell you when you try to select the seats. I periodically check all my seat assignments when flying a carrier that lets you chose seats.
I don't understand you last question. Delta has nothing to do with sw/at.

My last question is mainly because there is so much drama with SW & Air Tran with picking seats or buying seats or trading seats if you check in at 24 hours. I'm just wondering if Delta has any of the same issues with seating. It's my DD(16) first flight and we need to sit together.

Sw/at customers are having issues because they are in the middle of merging two completely different systems and not everyone is reading or understanding the warnings associated with purchasing tickets certain ways. Delta is not currently merging with anyone

Delta does tend to change aircraft more than SW or AT. The computer will rebook everyone's seats if a larger or smaller aircraft is swapped out. I would be prepared for the possibility of getting split up even if you book tickets together and pick out seats. Not to mention if your flight gets delayed and you need to rebook, just prepare her so there are no surprises.

On Delta, it depends on your fare class. Basic Economy (fare class E) does not allow advance seat assignments at all; you get your seat assignment when you check in at the airport.

What that tends to mean in practice is that this fare class will get you a variety of single middle seats.

Delta lets you pick you seats when you book. As a PP has mentioned, you can pay extra for a nicer seat (leather and a little more leg room) but you don't have to in order to pick your seat.

Haha, I just want to buy tickets and sit next to my kid. Is that too much to ask?!

Nope, not too much to ask, the airline determines the price and effect to do this. Airtran (FL) and Southwest (WN) have a different method that Delta (DL) or United (UA), but no one is better than another on a macro scale.

Delta allows you to pick your seats for no charge, unlike a few other airlines. That said, your colleagues were trying to warn you that DL does a lot of schedule shifts and aircraft swaps to accommodate their customers, timetable, and margins. To that end, DL tries to anticipate any issues that may occur on the travel day (like weather or mechanical issues) and they try to assign the right sized aircraft for the job. As such, DL tends to swizzle the plane assignments and timetables a bit (737s come in many configurations, so one is not like the others).

Given this info, it is also important to understand how the computer software assigns seats. Once a change is made (or anticipated), the software begins reassigning seats to get all passengers in a chair. While it may seem intuitive to us viewing it a month or more out, the software is actually programed to make this changes while people are traveling. Meaning, it is reactionary and very efficient in preventing stranded passengers due to weather, mechanical, and other delays over a global network. The software ensures people on their way to a connection point will make it to their destination ASAP, and will assign people seats to ensure this occurs. As such, many times people get into a chair but no next to someone they know. You will be happy with this if you see the effects while you are actually traveling.

However, we must be diligent with our reservation prior to travel. It isn't something to stress over, but it is something to watch more frequently than you'd normally do. When traveling on a Delta airline, I usually check my reservations about once a month until closer to the travel date, when I switch to weekly reviews. The week or two before travel, I'll check up on it daily (usually via the app or website). takes little time, and if something did change, I can ensure my party is still sitting together.

Please join us. Oh and, yes, DL lets you pick seats for free on almost all tickets (not E as Not Ursula said). No worries here, though, as they release held blocks of seats and those seat vacated by frequent fliers getting an upgrade. at the airport. Just arrive around 2 hours before your flight (earlier than later).

Even if your DD doesn't sit with you for some strange reason, she should be fine at 16.

Have fun and good luck!

I'm sure she will be fine, she's just nervous because its her first flight. Thanks for the info and the link.

Delta also lets you view what's available as you are looking.

I have been trying to complete our flights - when I checked 2 months ago it was $750+ and I was greedy and thought I would wait for it to go down.:sad2:

Instead, I checked the other day just because and it is now over $900+

So now we are doing one airline to the west coast (paid fare - coach), Delta from LAX direct to MCO night flight (paid fare - first class) :thumbsup2

Return from MCO to LAX is on another airline - (miles and first class) with a layover at DFW. And the final leg back from LAX to home is on the original airline (miles - coach).

Now this is costing me the original $700+ but I have got First Class on the Continent!:banana::banana:
