Delta Seating Policy

gibsontrio, we are flying on april 29th. I did a live chat with delta, the rep. stated that some seats were blocked and would be released only at check in and that my seats would be assigned at the airport. Oh joy, I just needed more stress. :scared1:

If you aren't going to fly an airline because your seats were moved...

If you aren't going to fly an airline becuase the flight times changes...

If you aren't going to fly an airline because the plane was delayed...

If you aren't going to fly if the airline does not do EVERYTHING exactly as you want....

You aren't going to fly!

Seriously, perfection in a US based carrier flying to MCO does NOT exist! Pick a day and there's an issue on any or all of them!

we only fly SW, Virgin America and Jetblue. IMO, They are the closest to perfection you will get in an airline.
We don't go near any of the legacy airlines anymore. I think it's been about 4 years since we have flown anyone besides these 3 and it has been smooth flying all 4 years (about 10-11 RT flights). Delta and United were always a nightmare for us.

I just purchased two tickets from CVG to MCO. Delta will not allow me to choose my seats for the trip down but would for the trip back. I called Delta and all the woman could tell me in broken english was that the airline had blocked the seats until 2 hrs before the flight.

Can anyone explain this to me???? This is the first time this has happened to me.

Thanks for any insight.

The seats left maybe only for those with Medallion status. They will open those up (if any left) at online check-in. So check-in online at 24 hours. Also, some Medallions might get upgraded to first class, opening up coach seats.

This website has the seat maps including Medallion seats:

Dont worry Steph. I've also had this happen flying Delta (out of PHL) with my 3 kids. There will be others with the same ticket as you. Once they open the gate they will call you up by name and give you a seat. Sometimes they do this for situations where people need assistance (or have an infant on lap). As long as your ticket says "confirmed" on it you are golden :) Have you ever flown from CVG ? This is my first time flying from this airport, hoping its smoother than my experience flying from Louisville!!

That's not always true. I've been on quite a few Delta flights lately that have been oversold and they were looking for volunteers. If there are none (which is rare), people with "confirmed" will get bumped. The first to get bumped will be those without seat assignments. I was on a Continental flight last year where everyone was already seated and the gate agent came on board and escorted 2 people off because of weight and balance issues. He asked for volunteers, there were none, so those 2 were chosen because they were the last to check-in.

Steph - keep checking the seat chart, especially as it gets close to your date. People cancel, medallions get upgraded to first class. That will open up seats. Last year on a business trip I didn't have a seat assignment. Finally one opened up in the very back, I took it. Then a couple of days later, a seat in row 2 opened and I took it (this was an RJ with no first class). If you still don't have seats, be sure to check-in at the 24 hour mark.

Thanks everyone guess I'm at delta's mercy. Yes, I have flown from CVG and SDF and LEX. I have never had any problems at any of them, all small. Actually I have never had any issues with Delta or getting seat assignments. This time we decided to fly from CVG because of the direct flights and the times of the flights.

Steph

We fly Delta a lot since it's the main airline in Cincinnati. I got the Gold AM Exp credit card with Delta to save on checked bags. I fly to FL a ton since my brother lives there and several friends live there too so even at $90 a year, it will still save me money on checked bags! I got my CC in Oct so I won't have to pay the fee till Oct and since Oct I've already flown 3x and checked a bag both ways each time so for me it's a great option! Last year, I flew Delta 6x (12 total) and only 1 flight out of 12 were our seats messed up from the ones we picked and my dad an I were assigned together but further back in the plane. It was on our way home so it wasn't a big deal and you don't pay for seats like Airtran so it wasn't a huge deal for us.

I've also enjoyed their skymiles. I used some of my points to get $100 my ticket last week to Orlando. It even let me use $100 off for my mom's ticket with no restrictions.

For us, unless Airtran is a ton cheaper, we will stick with Delta from Cincy..it's also closer than driving up to Dayton for Airtran.

That's happened to us before, they always help you out and bump people to 1st class to fill up seats. There were people with that issue last week flying from Orlando to Cincy and the one family asked if I would mind switching seats so they could sit 3 in a row instead of 2 and 1 and I had no problem, it was switching aisle for aisle and I ended up sitting across from my mom instead of several rows back!

I think people are more friendly and are willing to change seats especially when they are seats they aren't paying for unlike Airtran..especially if you are doing a fair trade..window for window, aisle for aisle.

Why do I never run into those people? Whenever I have been asked to change seats, it is always someone wanting my aisle seat and expecting me to move to a middle seat in the back of the plane. Sorry, but that is not going to happen.
