I was on the Delta site and if I'm reading this right, they want 40,000 miles for a ticket that runs under $400. taxes and fees included. Is that right??? If it is, I'm glad I stayed with the U.S. Bank card NW airlines used to use. I bought the same ticket for 20,000 miles. I guess I'll have to just save up miles for another 20,000 from when we fly delta to use the miles I have left with them. Sheesh!

It's hard to find lower mile awards these days on all the airlines. I just got a PIT-SNA coach ticket on Delta for 40,000 miles. USAirways wanted 60,000!

Funny you should bring this up. We didn't covert over to Delta with the merger and went with U.S. Bank. When the merger happened we thought we lost our miles. Fast forward to last month when we decided to sign up with American Express as my spouse and I signed up for separate cards so we could each get 20,000 miles. Make a long story short I didn't see my miles and realized I had to go to Delta and sign up. Somehow I had three accounts so I merged them with the Tech department...turned out my old Northwestern CC had over 30,000 miles! So now I can get a free ticket. We just cashed our U.S. Bank in February so we now have built over 15,000 but won't get over 20,000 when we need to book our flights. Given where airlines are raising rates, I would not be surprised if U.S. Bank raises the mileage for a free ticket. Also I talked with a Delta rep and they said people were willing to pay more miles if didn't mean any blackkout dates on the card and I would agree with that.

I have found that with the merger if I book a flight that was an orginial Delta route I used award ticket at 25,000 miles if it was an orginial Northwest route the same award ticket was at 45,000-60,000 miles. This also depends which hub I connect through. ATL lower miles DTW higher miles. I always fly through ATL because of this.

Orlando is rarely a good use of miles, but I have done it for family emergencies. Delta often has 25K mile tickets to MCO, but if you are looking for holiday periods etc you may find they are higher. (On my last flight there was a family of EIGHT all flying on FF tickets for example, the airlines only put so many "cheap" free seats per flight!)

I much perfer to use my miles for costly tickets... (For example I have two Business class flights booked to Europe next month!)

I just had to redeem 32,500 miles for a trip from Newark, NJ EWR to MSP, Minneapolis, MN. I need to accompany my sis to a conference, and I don't have the $550 for the price of the ticket. I was hoping to use only 25,000 miles but couldn't find anything.

Living here in Michigan that merger really killed the ability to get decent airfare rates. This month we flew out of Midway with Delta and saved nearly $400 with a hotel and free parking instead of flying out of Detroit. We live near Grand Rapids which made the drive to Chicago about an hour longer each way but well worth the price. We are going to Disney in December and really don't want to drive either to Detroit or Chicago given possible weather disruptions for that time of year. We are hoping to fly out of Grand Rapids which really only leaves us Airtran as an "affordable" option. I plan on cashing my miles with Delta which would probably mean the rest of the family taking Airtran.

It has been my experience that it has been difficult for years to redeem frequent flyer miles on Delta.

I usually have no problem booking Saver Awards on United if I book far enough in advance.

It is not a good deal when your miles are only worth 1¢ each. Don't do it! Strive for at least 2¢/mile.

When that switch happened we went with the Flex Perks by US Bank and have had good luck with them. Last Dec. we booked two non-stop flights on Airtran from Flint to MCO with 20,000 miles each. Right now we are saving up for our next Disney trip in year and should have enough miles for all 4 tickets, even if they go up to $600 each ticket (30,000 miles).

Our Northwest/Delta miles were donated to Make A Wish.

I agree Delta miles are high. In Dec 2010 I paid cash for my trip to Disney in Oct 2011. It was a great fare at $178, and I saved my miles for another trip. I want to go to Tampa, but the fares and miles (40,000) keep me from booking.
