Delta quietly rescheduling flights

I was half listening to my local news this morning while I was getting ready for work. They did a news blurb about Delta. I think they said due to fuel costs Delta would cancel any flight which wasn't full. I think they said the cancellations could come as close as three days before travel. I didn't pay too much attention since I fly SW out of RDU but the three days caught my attention.

edit: I just found a story on ABC news

asometimes (at least for Delta) your seat assignemtns change to "unassigned" if there is a schedule change but on the seat maps your seats are taken and you cannot reslect. But when you call on the telephone, you often get back the same seats because the seats are held for you for a little while after the schedule change. Ask for the same seats pretending you never saw the seating chart.

Nowadays it pays to check back on line often just to see if a schedule change took place.

And if you read the story you can see that your local news blurb was not exactly correct.

Delta is NOT cancelling any flight that isn't full.... That would cause them more problems then you can possibly imagine. (Think winter snow storm)

I just tried checking my Delta itineraries for December and the system is currently unavailable.

:guilty:

Carol

Edited to add - I just checked again and the itineraries are back up and my December flights are fine, however they were changed last month by a few minutes.

The system has been "unavailable" off an on since DL "upgraded" thier website a few months ago.... It's not the great thing DL claims it is LOL!

Thanks Carol. I did read the story after making my original post and I interpreted it as partial confirmation of the local news story. The article states "The reductions will be minimal, though, affecting early morning and late-night flights that have low bookings, Kelly said." Sounds to me like they might be cancelling some but not all flights which aren't full. I think folks flying Delta should be on alert. The story also states "Delta will notify affected passengers a few days in advance and will try to offer them choices about rescheduling flights, Kelly said." It does sound like cancellations can come as close as a few days out and travelers need to be aware. I'm sure the cancellations will cause Delta lots of problems but the traveler will be the one most effected.

It does sound like it is happening. My Delta flight (in January 06) was a 5:30am flight. That one is now cancelled, but they put me on the 6:45am flight... Bummer, because I love the really early flights because I get in earlier!
