I just heard on the news that a Delta flight from Atlanta to Hartford (my airport) ran into some geese.... No passengers were hurt, but there was damage to the nose of the plane.

Geez......now I have to worry about geese???????

Not really, it only happens once in a great while.

Oh great so not only am I going to be suspended in a steel tube with hundred of other people at the very comforting altitude of 10 km :earseek: I also have to consider the moving objects that the pilot must avoid!

Birds interfere with aircraft often. Happens all the time when your airport is near the ocean. Sea gulls, starlings, even pigeons. Usually the only time it causes any problem is when they get sucked into the engines. Don't you feel better now? ;)

If it makes you feel any better, there are lots of things that are done to keep people safe from bird strikes.
On one hand, The manufactuers of aircraft have to design aircraft with bird strikes in mind. Aircraft engines have to be tested before they are certified to see if they will still run after birds have been ingested.
On the other hand, airports where there are lots of bird populations have various means of encouraging the birds to go elsewhere (admittedly, with varying degrees of success).

Interesting link in ref the certification of jet engines in regards to bird ingestion

No worries, birds don't fly that high, they would freeze to death.
Pilots are trained professionals, they learn how to avoid this stuff, how many problems do you read about? Not many is my guess.

LOL, ever so much better now. The British were using chickens (dead)thrown at a high speed into the windshields of planes to see if they could withstand the "hit". The windshields held.
Americans tried the same thing, the windshields failed. The British told the Americans to not use frozen chickens. :)

There is much more in life to worry about, this is truly a non issue.

Oh Gail...frozen chickens...thanks for that chuckle!! Anyway, my mom was flying out of SeaTac when starlings or maybe a gull, got sucked into the engine. Held her up for about 3 hrs. And when my dh used to fly on business to WV, he flew into a very small airport. Before you could take off, they had someone drive down the runway, honking their horns to scare off the birds and deer!!! Now, that's scary!!!!

LOL, when I flew into a little airport near Bentonville Arkansas, we had to do an almost touch and go cause there was an animal on the runway. Gotta tell you being in a landing mode then going up again was amusing, to say the least.

OOOHHH, I feel so much better now knowing that they may throw chickens at the windows:teeth:

As long as they are not frozen, you have nothing to worry about. :)
Actually, it is a test they do when the aircraft is on the ground and no pax are aboard. You would not encounter this.

Gee Gail, just when I was looking forward to catching some "fast food" on the plane you go and wreck my plans:rolleyes: :teeth:

While reading this thread, all I could think of was the scene in "Snow Dogs" where the kids have to clear off the runway so the plane can land because it doubles as their hockey rink!
I once was on a plane that aborted its landing at Midway due to a "bird" on the runway. It was the metal kind, as opposed to the feathered type...a tiny little plane that was trying to take off and that had skidded into a snow bank! Luckily no one was hurt, and we saw it stuck in the snow as we taxied to our gate when we were finally able to land. Our 757-300 had already been delayed several hours due to the snow storm, and then we had to circle Joliet for a while, so I was surprised that the little plane would even attempt to take off under those conditions. O'Hare was closed that day, but amazingly Midway was still open.
My other exciting experience doesn't have to do with birds either. We had been diverted to Rockford and were finally landing at Midway after a 6 hour fiasco when we suddenly zoomed back up into the sky at the last possible second. The gear was down, the runway was right there...I didn't realize they could abort so late. The pilot explained that we had been hit with an unexpected tail wind, and if you are familiar with Midway's famous short runways, you know why that would be a big problem. We had to turn and come in on another runway.

LOL, you would freeze doing that, :) Camping, OH NO NO NO, well......, maybe if it says Sheraton or Hilton.

I wouldn't worry about the birds either. My father was an airline pilot for 30 years and never had a catastrophic bird problem although I do recall one story he tells where a bird hit the windshield on departure. He has a number of interesting stories come to think about it.. Some of them a little scary, but he tells them well.

How about having to get an alligator off the runway???? Fun fun. :o
