Hi - hoping someone can help me with a couple of questions on using miles. We have miles that expire in December 2008. Do we have to book by December 2008 or actually fly before December 2008?

Also, what happens if we book something using the miles and then for some reason couldn't go and had to cancel. Do we get the miles back into our account? Would they still have the same expiration date?

Thanks for any help. I spoke with Delta last night, but it was obvious that the person was not in the US and was reading her answers from a script. I wasn't too confident in anything she was saying.

Miles used to book a flight *can be* redeposited into your account prior to the flight you've booked. (I am not certain how far in advance it must be done.) In the past, the fee was $50 - like many things, it may have gone up.

If you're feeling brave, search for the word "redeposit" on Delta's web site.

And unless things have changed, your miles must be used to book by their expiration date, regardless of the date of actual travel.

I would suggest visiting www.flyertalk.com go to miles and points, then go to the airline forums. The people on that board are very knowledgble about using ff miles.

SafetyMom had a great suggestion. Plus there are other ways to keep the account active rather then using them. (My boyfriend extended his a few years ago when we won "500" miles at a Braves game Depositing that kept the account active. I keep my mother's active and I had to "buy 100" miles one year!)
