DH & I were scheduled to fly on Delta to WDW on our beloved 9:30 PM flight. Flight was cancelled and were weren't notified. But thanks to these bds., I started to check about 3 wks. prior to scheduled flight and learned of the cancellation myself. When I called Delta, they couldn't accomodate us on another flight that met our schedule and allowed us to use skymiles for one of the tickets. I cancelled on Oct 11th. Skymiles were returned to the acct. But no refund appeared on credit card bill. Waited for a second credit card cycle and still no credit. (I probably shouldn't have waited to call when it didn't make the first cycle, but I felt that things were crazy for the airlines) I called Delta. My credit never went thru. I spoke w/ customer care, who were very nice and they promised it would go thru w/in 14 days. I'll follow up more closely this time.

So what happened with your flight when it was cancelled? Did you end up booking another airline or did you not go on your trip? I'm curious about cancelled flights because if my redeye got canceled, I don't know what I would do!!!

Once we could not get the late flight, we drove. We had very strict time constraints, since this was a special adult-only trip and I was coordinating my DSs schedules w/ my parents' schedules. I don't know if we were ever going to be notified, but if we would have arrived at the airport, blissfully unaware that the 9:30 PM flight was cancelled, we would have been completely out of luck, since there were no available flights to accomodate us. I found out about the cancellation on Delta's website and when I called to confirm it and discuss my options, they only had a 5:30 PM flight. DH & I were working the day of the flight and w/ security requiring such early arrivals and my DSs schedules, we couldn't do 5:30. Overall, a very bad scene, only made worse by the "delay" in refunding. Customer service said that the refund request is done by e-mail. If the e-mail doesn't get thru/is lost etc., there is no way that they follow up, unless the customer does. I didn't realize how "frail" the system was or I would have been more vigilant in monitoring the refund. The last person that I spoke to seemed very well-versed & gave me his name, so I'm hopeful all will end well.

Generality:

Your super saver flight home was cancelled, and due to your time schedule and unavailability of other convenient flights, you returned home some other way, for example Greyhound bus.

Wrong: The airline backcharges you or your travel agent for the equivalent one way fare down to Disney.

Right: You are entitled to a refund of half the fare you paid.

True: Flying one way on a round trip fare and throwing away the return ticket is against airline rules.

Our flight was canceled a week or so before yours. I also found out via website. I called and they refunded my $$ on CC the next day since we didn't like the other options. They were great to us. However, they didn't refund my sister's $$ on her CC. I called after my refund showed up and they said hers just didn't get sent through. I think they had so many it was hard to keep up with. I think Delta, in my case, did a wonderful job accomodating us. We got our $$ back and drove down instead. I didn't really want to fly so I was glad our flight was cancelled. It really is best to follow up on any refunds. Mistakes can happen. I opened my water bill this month to find it was $310 (instead of $30)!! Seems the meter reader coded in the wrong reading. Bad thing is we have an automatic deduction. Lucky, we had 1.5 wks before it was deducted so I think the problem is solved. Meter reader came out again and re-read it.

I agree w/ you, TinkerbellRules. Mistakes do happen and I'm sure things are crazy now for the airlines. What surprised me was the frailty of Delta's refund system. Sending an e-mail, w/ no follow-up will allow for alot of mistakes. I have accidentally deleted important e-mail messages, like my first contact from DS's teacher--talk about good first impressions!. My point was to follow up yourself, because no one else is.

Sue: What was strange with the Delta refunds is that I gave them my sis' info as well, but the person forgot to send hers to the refund dept or something like that, but sent ours. Other than that, everything went fine.

Speaking of deleting emails, my Outlook deletes my read messages after a certain period of time (one wk?). I can't for the life of me, figure out how to stop it. It has deleted important messages as well. I usually go back in and mark as unread to keep them. Strange!

I too had a little trouble getting a refund from Delta. Same situation as the OP. All the reps I talked with were very nice about it and after two calls the refund appeared on my CC. Hope yours goes thru quickly! :-)
