My husband just went to see his dad. He bought a round trip ticket. Now that he is there, his dad offerred him a car. So my husband is going to drive the car home. Do we call the airline or just not use the ticket? We want to make sure we get the miles for at least the portion of the trip he used. I wanted to see if anyone had experience with this before I cal Delta.

I also wondered if we can have a credit for the unused portion? Thanks:confused3

You should get the miles for the trip he actually took.

Not sure about credit for the unused portion, but it may end up to be nothing at all. Applying the value of the unused portion to a new ticket would be considered a 'change' transaction, and I believe Delta charges $150 for a change regardless of the value of the ticket.

If it is a refundable ticket he should be able to get a credit. He should get the frequent flyer miles for the flights he took regardless of the fare he paid.

thanks! I guess we will call tomorrow before the next flight leaves. I appreciate your responses.

Don't call Delta. What you are doing is against the rules of the ticket. In exchange for buying a round-trip, you received a discount. By not using the round-trip, Delta has every right to charge you for the price of a one-way ticket, which is frequently more than a round-trip, depending on the route.

Airlines go after customers that do this often, but let it slide otherwise. Just don't contact them and bring it to their attention, you might actually owe more money.

The miles for the flown portion will be credited regardless.

Actually, its probably NOT going to be a problem at all.

My daughter flies Delta all the time for school, and the price of a one-way is not higher than each way of a round-trip.

Which is only the case in the small number of ~60 airports where Delta competes with a low-fare carrier.

At the other 200+ airports Delta flies to, its a problem.

This is actually correct. As you said, they don't necessarily go against folks who do it once. They focus their efforts on catching the folks who exploit lower round-trip fares on a regular basis.

You will only be credited for the miles where you flew so even though you paid for the return trip you won't be given the miles for THAT part of the trip. The only way to use the unused portion of the ticket would be to pay the change fee and reschedule the return portion of the trip for another date within 30 days but only from the original airports (if the flight was from Atlanta to Baltimore then that is the only route you can take - no changing airports).

Unless you have a fully refundable fare or you plan to use that routing in the next 30 days then I wouldn't bother to call the airline at all. You won't be given any type of credit and if you haven't taken the first part of the trip then you risk the entire ticket being cancelled.

Thanks everyone. I checked for a future date (because we did think it was going to be round trip) and one way is MUCH higher than round trip.

DH is already there, so the first leg has already been used. Paying $150 to rebook would be more than we paid for 1/2 of the ticket. We had a really cheap RT ticket.

I guess we will just let it go. Thanks
