Delta bankruptcy ?

Will flights be affected if Delta does file for bankruptcy? We're booked on a delta flight leaving Sat for Disney.

It is my understanding that Delta plans to honor these miles.

I just wish delta would lower some of their prices.

I usually fly delta and have skymiles as well. Right now to book for May 06 they want $331 RT!! Normally its between 175-250. Im ready to buy as soon as the prices go down! Ill buy from any carrier right now if someone would lower their rates!

Nowadays it is not a good idea to have lots of miles banked. I have cut my number down quite a bit. That way if something does happen I haven't lost all those miles.

Filing for bankruptcy does not mean going out of business. It means that they hopefully get some help in paying off their debts, maybe some debts will never get paid at all. But they will continue to fly, although it is possible that some flights could get cancelled. Companies use bankruptcy to try to make it so they can stay in business, not end business. Unfortunately, the people who may be most affected are their employees who may lose some benefits, possibly lose some of their pensions, may in fact lose their jobs. But they will continue to fly planes.

One of the main reason major airlines go into bankruptcy is to break the union contracts and bring their costs down. They are not going out of business.

Our Skymiles balance is a small amount for us. We fly often and use miles almost everytime.

What happens if you book a flight using your miles and Delta does go bankrupt (I don't think that they will but...) I know if you have paid for the ticket, you can rebook with another airline for a small fee. Does that apply to tickets purchased using miles as well? I plan to use some of our miles to purchase tickets for December 2006.

I think Delta and NWA will be filing for bankruptcy protection this week. But, as others have noted, that just means that they're continuing to operate but with oversight and protection. So, I believe that if you've purchased tickets either with money or miles, your ticket will be good. They will probably have some changes in flights, etc. but that's not unusual even if an airline isn't in bankruptcy.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of what typically happens to ticket prices when one (or two) airline(s) files? I can't recall what happened with United. Was there an immediate affect with pricing?

I wouldn't foresee any change in pricing, other than the completely irrational changes that occur from day to day and week to week. As others have stated, the main goal of filing bankruptcy reorganization is to get protection from creditors and relief from union contracts... ticket prices shouldn't be impacted (to the good or bad).

The objective now will be to reorganize (consolidate operations and reduce flights) so as to reduce cost. So there may be some minor changes to the service offered. As part of US Airways efforts in Chapter 11, they've cancelled hundreds of flights per day in and out of Pittsburgh, for example. Generally, the service disruptions that would occur with an airline in bankruptcy would affect those who live in or are traveling to the hub cities the most (Atlanta, Detroit, Minneapolis, Memphis, Dallas, Salt Lake City, and to a lesser extent, New York and Orlando).
