We paid a $70 delivery fee to have a fridge delivered today from Sears, as well as $15 to remove old fridge. Would you tip the delivery guys?
I do tip for furniture but that was free delivery.

No, I would not. You are already paying for the delivery plus $15.

if I pay for delivery, then no i do not tip, or if it is a big store. like i got free delivery for my mattress set, but i had to spend a certain amount, so i ended up upgrading an item rather than spending that money on delivery. i did not tip as the employees work for the company i am buying the item from.

Tipping:

  • From a local "mom-and-pop" store? Perhaps -- depending on the situation...
  • From a national chain store (in this case, Sears)? Absolutely not!
Reason for this, is that most well-known retail stores have a policy of their employees not accepting gratuities -- if they do so, and word gets out (especially in a small area such as OP's home state), it could lead to someone's termination.

Honestly, for something called the "Budget Board", it seems everyone around here must be doing pretty well, financially if they can tip the driver from Sears...

What about if the retail store outsources their deliveries? I recently had a new washer delivered from Lowes and the delivery men were not Lowes employees. They delivered out of a Budget rental truck. I saw their delivery list and they were delivering for various stores - not just Lowes.

ohhhh I had a fridge delivered friday from sears and went back and forth (Though my haul away was only 10):rotfl2: I did not tip after reading online and considering I paid 80 for them to bring it 2 miles somewhere they made enough IMO but I really did debate on this .

We frequently tip. We are in a service industry and appreciate the service when it is returned.

Usually the company that is providing the truck and workers is pocketing the service fee. Therefore, if and when you tip, you would be tipping the individual workers. If the guys are really nice, treat their customers well, and/or go out of their way to give good service (i.e. - removing existing/old, carting up/down the stairs or through hallways), I see no reason not to acknowledge that with some cash. :)

I do, but our house is difficult to deliver to (trucks can't easily maneuver our driveway, so they usually park at the street at have to wheel the appliance down our steep winding driveway to our house...the last time a furniture company delivered to our house they hit and broke a retaining wall and then hit a tree on the backing out...it wasn't pretty). So yes, I tip them because I know we are a difficult place to deliver to.

And I always offer them a drink, either a bottled water or a can of soda, especially if it's hot. If it's cold out, I offer coffee (we keep disposable to go cups on hand, so it's easy to make them a to go cup in the Keurig)

I don't think any of the stores here do their own deliveries, they are all outsourced based on my experience.

I do if they do a good job. Our house has stairs and usually akward to get things in and out.

Thanks for the input. I went with no tip. We had the old fridge ready to go, the delivery guys were in and out of the house in about 5 minutes.

They removed the plastic but it left alot of sticky adhesive to clean up on the outside. Otherwise uneventful delivery (last time, the guys dropped and dented my new washer, then dragged it on the black top so tipping did not even enter my mind!)

I would venture a guess that this not actually a shortcoming of the delivery men, but the manufacturer or retailer who chooses the shipping wrap.
