It is 36 miles from DLR to USH. Most likely it would be too costly for a cab.

The easiest way is to take the Universal Studios shuttle from most Disneyland area hotels. Its cost is $89 adult, $79 kids and includes admission to Universal Studios. From Universal Studios Hollywood website look under Visitor Information, Transportation, Anaheim area Shuttle.

I'm currently planning my first ever trip to DL from the UK for early next year. I'm planning on staying at one of the hotels near DL, rather than on property, and am currently choosing which one, thanks to the tons of help I got previously from fellow Diser's!
Anyway, while I'm there and as it's a long distance from England and I want to make the most of the trip, I want to visit Universal Studios as well. I plan to spend a couple of days there.
But I can't find any info on how far it is from DL to Universal? I don't drive so will probably get a cab. But is that do-able or is it too far? My other option would be to just book my last couple of nights at a hotel nearer Universal and transfer down there.
Can anyone help? Is it too far by cab from DL to Universal to be cost effective?

My family loves USH. We ahve done the VIP tour times 3 now and to us old horror movie fans well worth it. I would do what Huff said and do the bus back and forth.
