I don't know what to do. Is it worth leaving a good thing for more $$?? It would be a very similar position to what I have now. I need to apply in the next 2 weeks.

So there ya go! Not too exciting, but driving me crazy to the point that I can't sleep.

What is the position like at the new place? It's one thing for people to talk a good game and upsell a job, then you show up and find in reality it's a nightmare working environment. :headache: The extra money is because they have to pay the extra to get people to stay. :scared1: And that's why there was an opening.

Do people tend to stay long term in the same position at the new place? How stable is the company? Getting more money in the short term, only to lose it down the road is no bargain.

However, with no commute, much more money, if it turns out to be a great job, it sounds like a real win. :thumbsup2

In this economy, no one can fault you for leaving a job for a better paying job. That's life. If people in your small town ask you why you left your old position, you can simply say, "I loved my old job, but this new place offered more money and we really need to save it right now." Only someone jealous or not have an understanding of these economic hard times, (or in denial,) would have a problem with you saying that.

I say, apply. If they bring you in, talk to them. You'll get a feel about the place, the interviewer, how things are really run. You don't have enough info to make a solid decision right now. Applying gives you an opportunity and choice you didn't have otherwise. You want to be able to create the opportunity so that you can say no.

LOL Sorry. I had to go to the doctor right after I posted.

I just thought I'd have some fun with a deleted post. ;)

Ok-so here is the real deal since I threw the gossipers off the track.

I have been at a job for about 7 years in a nearby town. I like it, I am respected, hopefully have a decent reputation. A similar position has opened in my town. The pay is more, by a substantial amount, no commute. However, the grass isn't always greener.

My salary will increase yearly in both places, but more in the one that has openings. DH is in sales, he makes a salary that will probably not increase much, plus he makes bonuses, but in sales you never know what a bonus may be. We pay the bills, but usually don't get any put in savings.

I would. If it doesn't work out, there's a good chance your old (current) job would hire you back, especially if you explain that you're happy there but really would like something closer.

Don't know if this was intended for me but I knew it was all in good fun! :)

OP, changing the title to delete, is like sending out a smoke signal.

Then I am compelled to read it.

What is it about posts that say "deleted" that does that to me?:lmao:

Moth to a flame....it's like a moth to a flame....

OP, I agree that you should do some checking to see what the working conditions are at the other place first. The other thing you can do is apply and when you get the job, give your current job a chance to match the salary before you accept the new position.

maybe next time there is a deleted post one should say something like you should go to a doctor for real and have them take a look at THAT :X, or WOW YOU DID WHAT IN THAT ELEVATOR!!!!, silly like the arrested comment, made the person come back hehehe. I saw the deleted to and had to come in lol.

This thread has me :lmao:. That's a rarity anymore here on the DIS, at least for me. Thanks, Liberty Belle :).

Hi! How nice of you to "new rule" yourself ! :rotfl: Of course, like the others, I will ALWAYS read a thread marked "deleated"! ;)

Good luck with your decision! My DH changed jobs a few years ago & had a terrible time making the decision. Similar pay, job duties & commute. Even tho he was very unhappy at the previous job, he had been there for over 25 years. The fear of the unknown is really hard to overcome. He had said he wanted out of old company for years & then almost stayed just from fear of change. But he did make the change & he is so glad he did (so am I!) He has advanced at new job twice already & he hears from friends that old company is worse than before. So sometimes just taking that leap of faith works out. Good luck!

My advice would be to talk to some people who are working in the place that you are considering going to. Find out what the environment is like, do they enjoy their jobs, etc. I learned a painful lesson once where I changed jobs and ended up with a tyrant for a boss. If I had just taken the time to do a little background research, I could have saved myself a lot of heartache and trouble!

I will say that it is very nice to work closer to home (particularly if you have kids). I enjoy having a 10 minute commute vs. the 30 minutes I once had. And getting a raise is also good. However, you may also find that your current employer is willing to "ante up" if you get a better offer. I know of several people who have gotten raises just by letting their employer know that they are considering going on to greener pastures.

So you were offered a job stealing Yankee Candles? I'm confused....

(Pssssstttt, ignore money and go for what makes you happy.)
