I've never heard of that being an allergic reaction before. o_O

You're right, my friend calls it an allergy, but maybe just for the sake of brevity when ordering at a restaurant. I'm thinking it may be classified as an intolerance? If you google it though, you can find cases of people with this condition not being able to stay awake after consuming raw onions. She said it took her the longest time to figure out what was going on, it started when she was pregnant so she thought it was some crazy pregnancy fatigue. But it continued behind that, she somehow linked it to the onions, and read about cases where people could not stay awake after consuming them to the point of falling asleep at the wheel of a car. Food reactions are so varied and strange!

Yes, but it depends on where they are from. If it's a pickle chip/slice, over-battered, and soggy? UGH (Buffalo Wild Wings, I'm looking at you)! There is a place here in town, the Bear Brew Pub, that makes the most divine fried pickles. They use the half-sour pickle spears and cut them into chunks. The batter is light and crispy, the pickle inside fragrant and crunchy. Hmmm... it's 1:30 and 85 degrees. I might go to the BB, sit out on the deck, and enjoy some pickles and a beer for lunch, RIGHT NOW!!

I'm with you on this-it has to be a bread crumb or corn meal coating-deep fried pickles in batter are nasty IMO.

You're allergic to garlic? Ugh, that must be one of the tougher allergies to have, are you able to ever go out to eat? Do you have an anaphylactic reaction to it? My friend is allergic to red onions but they don't cause breathing difficulties, they cause her to fall asleep wih no control over it

OP, you need an "other" option on your poll, for "never tried them" :)

Yes, it's pretty weird. Thankfully it won't close my airway or anything, but it will make me vomit badly about 4 or 5 hours after I eat it. I don't eat out much at all, but when I do I confirm that whatever I order doesn't have garlic in it. I can tolerate things that have a tiny pinch of it to where you don't even taste it. But garlic bread, pickles that have garlic, etc...will make me very sick.

EDIT - like posted above by katie01, it may be classified more as an "intolerance" than a true "allergy" since I don't need to go to the hospital or anything. But there is zero doubt that garlic is the trigger.

OMG Klayfish, that's terrible. I'm thinking of my family and how you couldn't eat with us if we didn't know that - garlic is just in everything. Of course, on holidays we deal with a zillion weird food issues, but if we didn't know it, that'd terrible! I mean throwing up isn't going to the hospital, but it certainly sucks and would classify as an allergy to me.

The onions thing is one I've heard of, but never knew anyone who had it! @katie01 - you're so right about the weird re-actions we have as humans to food/environmental factors, all kinds of stuff.

If I'm eating with people I don't know, then I'd tell them in advance. When I go for my races, it's a weekend long event. My team knows I'm allergic, so when we're planning meals, they'll tell me if there's garlic in something we're making. I have no problem with it, I wouldn't want them to alter the entire food set up just for me. There's so much food around that I can find plenty to eat. Just as long as they let me know if something has garlic, I'm good. Being the health person I am, I bring half my own food anyway.

That's good. I mean its easy enough to hold garlic on pretty much anything- if you knew to do it:) Still, glad you could figure it out. I think that would have taken a while.

I just tried those recently and I am not a fan. I do love fresh dill pickles though, have to be cold and crisp and crunchy.

I have added the choice of never tried them as request by some posts

Also I've made it so you can change your answer for anyone who picked one before never tried them was an option

My daughter had garlic issues for about 8 or so years. She'd get terrible stomach pains and diarrhea from garlic. We had to make sure sandwiches came with plain mayo, not aioli, order Olive Garden breadsticks without the garlic on top, etc. She was OK with a little bit of freshly-cooked garlic in spaghetti sauce or maybe a stir-fry, but anything that wasn't cooked or had garlic salt/powder in it made her dreadfully ill. She seems to have passed this stage, fortunately, but it was really tough while she was going through it.

PS- I had the pickles and beer for lunch! :drinking1

I love them and so my whole family, it's not uncommon for six of us to go out for dinner and order 2-3 orders to split.

I like them but never order them. I'd be the only one in my family who would eat them and I don't need to eat an entire order.

I have never tried them because the very thought grosses me out. I like pickles... and I like fried foods, but the thought of those two put together makes me want to vomit.

You can't judge them until you've tried them. :)

You remind me of my Mom when I stopped by to visit her once and had my lunch with me, Chinese. She asked what it was, I told her, she wrinkled her nose up. I asked her if she'd ever tried any Chinese food and she said, "well, no..." So I got her to try it and she LOVED it! The local Chinese buffet quickly became one of her favorite places to eat!

As for the OP's question, I do like deep fried pickles but it really depends on the pickles and the batter. I don't like corn meal batter very well (except on catfish) but a lighter batter is wonderful. And I prefer pickle chips rather than spears. And Ranch dressing. Delicious!!

I really like pickles. Except when they're deep fried. Tried them at the Carnation Cafe at Disneyland a couple of years ago (first time ever trying fried pickles) and they were disgusting. I couldn't even make it through a whole pickle spear.

If you ever decide to try them again, try someplace that does the fried pickle chips (like hamburger dill chips?). Here, all the local owned places use the chips. They are dipped in a seasoned egg wash and then floured. Its not a thick batter, but just a light crispy outside. They are so good if you like pickles.

The spears are just way too much pickle and not enough crunchy.

I always thought they sounded repulsive until I tried them, and I love them.

I prefer the pickle chips to spears except for the Carnation Cafe ones in Disneyland, which were so good!!
