I had a deep cleaning a few months ago, after going MUCH too long without a visit to the dentist. I was very nervous and fearful about the procedure before I had it done- I had a hygenist who really scared me about it. She was very negative about the state of my gums, and told me they were awful, I had significant bone loss, and I'd probably need to be referred to a periodontist even after cleaning. Well...
That hygenist is no longer with the dentist- seems she was getting lots of complaints about her attitude. She was scaring lots of patients with predictions of terrible procedures and such.. I had the cleaning done in two visits, one for each side. It wasn't awful at all, if you don't mind the shots of Novacaine. A little sore afterward, but only for a few hours, and Tylenol takes care of it, no problem.
My cleaning was done by a really great new hygenist- the dentist administered the injections and checked her work at the end of the cleaning, but that was the only time I saw him.. I believe that the cost wasn't too awful- we have excellent dental coverage, so we only paid 10% of the final bill. For sure, less than $1000 (that is total, not the portion I paid! I think I paid about $80 or so).
After having the cleaning done, my pockets have vastly improved. Glad I had it done, but I am flossing, brushing, mouthwashing, and visiting my dentist often to prevent having to have it done again!
