"Deep Cleaning" Dental ?

I had a deep cleaning a few months ago, after going MUCH too long without a visit to the dentist. I was very nervous and fearful about the procedure before I had it done- I had a hygenist who really scared me about it. She was very negative about the state of my gums, and told me they were awful, I had significant bone loss, and I'd probably need to be referred to a periodontist even after cleaning. Well...

That hygenist is no longer with the dentist- seems she was getting lots of complaints about her attitude. She was scaring lots of patients with predictions of terrible procedures and such.. I had the cleaning done in two visits, one for each side. It wasn't awful at all, if you don't mind the shots of Novacaine. A little sore afterward, but only for a few hours, and Tylenol takes care of it, no problem.

My cleaning was done by a really great new hygenist- the dentist administered the injections and checked her work at the end of the cleaning, but that was the only time I saw him.. I believe that the cost wasn't too awful- we have excellent dental coverage, so we only paid 10% of the final bill. For sure, less than $1000 (that is total, not the portion I paid! I think I paid about $80 or so).

After having the cleaning done, my pockets have vastly improved. Glad I had it done, but I am flossing, brushing, mouthwashing, and visiting my dentist often to prevent having to have it done again! ::yes::

I realize you do this for a living. I am truly elated that you do this for a living. Jumping for joy actually! I am relaying a personal experience to the OP of what I go through. This is the correct information on what I go through. I really don't care what or how you do it for your patients. All I know is that a periodontist does this for me. Whether you like or or not, that is what happens. And yes, you attacked me and are very nasty. I consider it harrassment. I do not have you confused with anyone. I know who you are. I am done with you. Unlike some, I have no time for childish games.

I'm sorry you feel this way - I really do think you have me confused with someone else, but I won't argue with you:(

btw.. I agree with tiggersmom2 on this topic

? for tiggersmom2... what is the name for the procedure done when you have "pits" in the gum where the gum is receding... and then the periodontist goes in cleans, then pulls the gum tissue up around the tooth.. then sutures it into place....???
DH had this done.. painful and expensive...
He was 40, in good health, 1 cavity but had the gum problem....

thanks!

Hi Mamajoan!:wave2:
The procedure you are describing (sutures tissue in place) is gum surgery. This IS done by the periodontist and is professionally known as "laying a flap" to deep clean the teeth. There is 2 different procedures I do
1. Gross Debridement - This is a deep cleaning and it just get off the large masses on the tooth.
2. Root Planning and Curretage - this is where we finely scale the tooth with our instruments (from root to crown).

Please let me know if I can be of more help!:wave2:

I never thought I would lock a thread on a dental procedure because of too many personal attacks! First time for everything I guess
