I am considering changing our 1 br to a 2 br for our May trip, and am seeing these terms - dedicated and lock-off. While I get that the lock-off is a 1br plus a studio, I'm not sure I "get" what is different in terms of the unit. Is it just the other entrance/addl coffee maker etc/what?! We are doing this mainly so teen will have separate bedroom, if that makes a difference for your explanation.

Thanks so much!

A lock off is a 1BR plus studio (which means the studio has a kitchentte in it). The dedicated 2 BR bedrooms have no patio, no outside door or kitchenette. The dedicated has a sink area where the kitchenette would be.

Since you have teens, I suppose it comes down to whether you want to hear them come in at night. With a lock off they will have their own entry door. With a dedicated, they have to enter the main door.

Hijacking with a follow-up question...:rolleyes1

If the dedicated 2 BDR has no second patio (which would have been with the studio in a lock-off), is the single patio/balcony larger than the 1BDR?

Boy, I hope that makes sense!

Nope, the studio patio is rather small, maybe 5'x5' (or even less). The porch on the one bedroom section is separate from the studio portion and it is very big. They have a round table (like 6' diameter) with four chairs. You have an entrance from the dining room area and from the master bedroom.

In addition, where the entrance would be for the studio (now a second bedroom), you'll have a very large closet.

At OKW, when you request a two bedroom, you usually get a dedicated two bedroom unless you specifically request the lock off.

I have booked 2 2-bedrooms for the Christmas season, and they never even asked me if I wanted a dedicated or a lock-off - when I got the confirmations in the mail, they were both dedicated 2-bedrooms.

So, do I understand correctly that there isn't a balcony on the "studio" portion of the dedicated 2-bedroom? That kinda stinks!

They won't ask whether you want dedicated or lock-off usually, assuming a deicated unit is available. It is automatically assumed that you want dedicated unless you specifically state you want a lock-off unit. You understand correctly, there is no balcony off the 2nd bedroom of a dedicated unit, just as there is no exterior entry.

There is no balcony off the second bedroom of a dedicated two bedroom. We always get a lock off two bedroom because my brother and his family have a habit of deciding not to go at the last minute and we can cancel the studio and still have the one bedroom. Luckly we live close so it's not a problem when those points go into holding.

Actually, member services is not supposed to "drop" half a lock-off unit and allow you to reatain the other portion if their is anyone on the waitlist for the units created.

If you booked a lock-off and someone else was on a waitlist for a one bedroom (which they could not get because you booked the unit as a lock-off), you are technically supposed to go to the bottom of the waitlist for a one bedroom, rather than just dropping the studio.

It has been a while since they did that. Now that my children are grown we usually get 2 studios.

Chuck, that was in the very early days of OKW when there was alot of availability. It has been awhile but I am thinking that they must have canceled the whole ressie and booked a new one but I don't remember getting another confirmation. Oh well the memory isn't what it used to be.:sad2:

Thanks very much! I'm wanting the dedicated, then, because I've no desire for an add'l door, and don't need the extra balcony. Great!

Stinks not! YOu get an extra walk in closet and the extra large OKW balcony with table and 4 chairs, ceiling fan etc. FAR better than the little cube of a balcony on the 2nd bedroom of a lock off that is probably engolfed in vegetation anyway.

Can I ask an additional question? Are there 2 queen beds in both the studio of the lock-off and the 2nd bedroom of the dedicated? In other words, are the sleeping arrangements different?

The sleeping arrangements are exactly the same with 2 queen beds in the second bedroom.

Absolutely right - the extra closet is so much better than that tiny balcony any day and having the extra sink outside the bathroom is good with teens also.

Yes, all studios and 2nd bedrooms at OKW have two queen beds in them. The only sofa sleepers at OKW are the queen sofa sleepers in the living rooms.

Now I'm a little confused...

A 2BR lock-off will have a balcony off the studio portion and a balcony off the living room of the 1BR, correct?

Is the balcony that's off the 1BR different in a lock-off than in a dedicated or are they the same size?

We're going with our DD. She is getting the studio portion of the 2BR. I'm sure she would like to be able to sit out on her balcony, alone, sometimes, especially while talking to her BF on her cell phone at night.

But, I don't want to give up having a bigger balcony on my side! LOL

This is our first time staying at OKW, in a 2BR. She won't need the extra closet space or sink, so, really the only deciding factor in getting the lock-off instead of the dedicated, is the extra balcony.

The large porch on the one or two bedroom is the same size, approximately. Some might be shaped a little bit differently with with a bit of a bow instead of just straight across.

You'll have to request the lock off instead of the dedicated because they will automatically put you in the dedicated to have more rooms available for other guests.
