We purchased a resale in January and still do not have our planner. I keep seeing people talk about dedicated 2 bedroom, lock off, etc. What are the advantages to these as opposed to standard?

Thank you.

"standard" refers to a view catagory.

Dedicated means that the unit is always the same size i.e. dedicated 2 bedroom, 1 bedroom, or studio. Lock off means that it is a 1 bedroom and studio connected by a "lock off" door so that it can be either a 1 bedroom plus a studio or a 2 bedroom unit.

Most DVC resorts have both dedicated units and lock off units with the exception of BWV and Jambo house at AKV. Those both have lock offs only.
In most cases, the dedicated 2 bedroom units will have two queen beds in the second bedroom, while the lock off will have a queen bed and a double bed sleep sofa. The exceptions there are BCV which has some dedicateds with the bed/sofa arrangement, and OKW, which has 2 queen beds in all second bedrooms including the studios.

We've noticed that if you're in a lock off studio, adjoining a one bedroom, noise is a slight factor. We were next to a very active family in December and could hear their kids, clink of plates, and could even smell them cooking.

We like dedicated 2 bdrms for a few reasons:
1. The layout of the 2nd bdrm. The two beds are nice, as opposed to the one bed and a pullout.

2. With kids, we like NOT having an outside door in that 2nd bedroom. Just makes us feel safer.....

Which makes me think.....DH and his buddies have a 2 bdrm BWV for Marathon Weekend. Obviously, it's a lockoff with an external door on that 2nd bedroom. Will the guys staying in that room get a key to that door? Or will their only key be to the main door, entering on the 1 BDRM side?

Which resort were you at where you noticed this? We have noticed this at some locations and not at others. At OKW ALL the second bedrooms have two beds, so that's not an issue there.

I prefer the dedicated 2 bedrooms for the extra space. At OKW, the dedicated has a great deal of additional closet space with a walk in closet where the entry door would be if it was a lock off studio. There is also an extra bath sink where the kitchenette would be.

the key works both doors.

the only way to prevent this is to get a 1-bedroom and studio - not a 2-bedroom

Dedicated and Lock-off are the two types of 2 Br units that can be reserved.

Dedicated is a 2 Br unit that has only one access door to the hallway (in the main living room/kitchen area of the unit), and in the second bedroom it has two queen beds, a bathroom, and no kitchenette (micro/fridge/plates/cups, etc.)

A lock-off 2 Br is really a 1 Br unit and a studio unit with a connecting door. They can be used together to be reserved as a 2 Br, or the rooms can be reserved individually as a 1 Br and a Studio. As for difference from the dedicated 2 Br, the second bedroom (the studio portion) has what any studio has. A queen bed and a queen sleeper sofa. It also has it's own doorway to the hall, as well as a kitchenette and the bathroom.

As for advantages/disadvantages? If you are in the 1 Br or Studio of a lock-off we haven't noticed any. No noise issues or anything. If you have the lock-off two bedroom, and you are two seperate families staying together, it is nice for each to have a doorway onto the hall, so not everyone has to go out through the living room. The family in the studio/second bedroom has a fridge. Advantages of a dedicated 2 Br include having two beds in the second bedroom, asopposed to the sleeper sofa.
