Decreasing reservation count question

I will be traveling with a large group and some have not yet committed to if they will be going into the parks with us. I want to make an ADR at a character meal. $10 per head cancellation.

I know, you snooze you lose - but there are kids involved and I would hate to see them disappointed if one set of kids goes and they didn't.

Question:
If I make the ADR for 13 people, can I call and change to 8 within 24 hours of it and not pay the $10 fee AND still get to keep a ressie for 8.

I'm thinking I remember in the past trying to do this and they would only allow me to do if they had a table for 8. Is my memory correct?

Yes you can lower the number of guests and keep your ressie.
Just an FYI, if even one person on the res shows up, there is no cancellation fee. They don't charge you for five missing people if only 8 out of 13 show up.
However it is just polite to let them know about the smaller group simply because it opens up a table for someone else.

As the PP said, it's generally easier to decrease your party size than it is to increase your party. So the general advice is to always make your ADRs for the maximum number of people that might be in your party. When you know for sure who is coming, you can call to change your ADR size. If they tell you nothing is available or that you cannot decrease the party without cancelling your existing ADR, keep your current ADR. When you get to the podium, tell the CM the correct party size and you'll be fine. As the PP said, as long as at least one person shows up to honor the ADR, you won't be charge the $10/pp no show fee for those that do not come.
