We've got a plain ol' concrete patio which we're trying to spruce up. We really like the look of the stained concrete, so I've been researching cost, ease of application, etc to determine if I really want to tackle this project.

Anyone done this yourself?

It appears that there are two methods of staining concrete which are available...one is acid staining (which looks better (IMO) and is more durable, but requires slightly more steps to complete. The other method is more along the lines of conventional water based paint/stain.

If you go this way you need to apply the sealer. My cousin did the paint last year and did not seal it. Well it is all gone now. The spring rains washed the paint away.

My Aunt and Uncle did the one where they put a coating on top of the concrete. I believe it is warranteed for 10 years. It looks outstanding!!!! They made a pattern that is very appealing to the eye.

No, thankfully my sister is a cement mason so we leave all that up to her. :)

The floors which have been acid stained, then sealed really look incredible.

just google "concrete stain", then go to some of the sites for photos/galleries of different floors. Your imagination (and your wallet) seems to be your only limitation.
