Decorating trends from the '80s or '90s- What don't you miss?

Do you mean the Gallery Glass do-it-yourself stained glass kits? I remember those being popular 10-15 years ago. It consisted of tubes of paint that you painted on glass to resemble stained glass.

Not the do-it-yourself kits. There used to be a whole bar motif back then.

I will admit that I still have formica mauve countertops LOL. UGHHH, but I got rid of the mauve and blue teapot wall paper and mauve vinyl floors . I can only do so much lol hopefully the counters in the kitchen will be gone soon.

Bows; painted on bows, stiffened bows on baskets, cut out wooden bows.

The only place I want to see a bow now is on a little girls head or a gift box.

:rotfl: You mean these cabinets??

I hate the look. It doesn't bother me enough to re-do the cabinets though...they're in good shape.

Back in '88 my Mom put in those cabinets at the place we lived at in Jersey. She loved them. Currently, it's one of her favorite features of my house, she still loves them!

AH Renters cabinets! LOL. Ive had those same cabinets in almost every aparment Ive rented

I figure if people are happy with their things, all the more power to them for not following every fad.

Good for you! Being surrounded by things you love never goes out of style!

I totally agree. I've had people try to tell me my neutral tones are out of style. Tough! I like them and when everyone else is repainting I'm perfectly happy with the choices I made..

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I agree.. It's kind of like telling someone else how to dress - or which hairstyle they should have.. Strictly personal preferences..:goodvibes

Now take this one house I went to look at with DD and her DH a number of years ago when they were house hunting.. We forever more referred to it as the "Pepto Bismol House".. ;) It was a huge house - and everything - and I do mean everything was pink.. Even the kitchen sink, fridge, and stove! Walls, woodwork, doors, carpeting, blinds, curtains, all 3 bathrooms - everything pink!! Obviously the owner loved pink.. Who knows why? Maybe there was some special meaning for them.. But - it was their personal taste and that's all that really counts..:)

I do have some concerns about when my Dson-in-law does their kitchen over though.. He is pretty adamant about black appliances (his favorite color for most everything is black).. For one, I think it's going to be a "fad"; for another I think it's going to make the kitchen dark and depressing; and lastly, I think the pet hairs and fingerprints are going to be hard to deal with.. But - not my choice - I'm only there part-time - and if that's what they choose, it's because it's what they like - not what society "tells" them they should like..:goodvibes

What exactly was the purpose of popcorn ceilings? Our new house doesn't have it and I don't miss it one bit. My 1960s house had it...but I'm not sure if it was original or not.

I remember the overdone popcorn. I had a ceiling that even had puffy popcorn AND sparkle in the ceiling. At the time--us kids thought it was the coolest thing ever when we ended up at the sparkle ceiling house.

Sometimes people used it to cover flaws in the ceiling (like cracks in the sheet rock and such).. Much cheaper than dry walling from scratch..

Others just liked it..:goodvibes

My parents went to all black appliances at least 15 years ago - so I think it's a fad that has stuck around for a while. They just recently got a new stainless steel fridge, but the sides are black so it still ties in with the rest of the appliances. It never looked too dark - but their kitchen is a nice size (flows into the dining space), gets good light, and the appliances are fairly spaced out. I would never do it in a galley kitchen or if you have a line of appliances.

It is the DEVIL. Our house is full of it. Not just popcorn, either. There are swirls in some rooms :headache:

We are skimming the ceilings of some rooms as we redecorate.

I thought popcorn ceilings were supposed to be noise-dampening? Our house is entirely done (ceilings and walls) in that "orange peel" finish. I kind of hate it.

I was totally on board with being happy that all of this is gone - pastels, black laquer, bows, popcorn ceilings are the devil... then you said swirls.

I will admit I dislike the very few newer houses I've seen them in, but my parents and some friends have houses from the 50's and 60's that have the most amazing patterns on the ceilings. I think I'd die if they wanted to remove them. I loved them as a child and I love them now. Unfortunately the man who did them passed on decades ago and I've never seen anyone who was able to replicate them.

You would have a field day in my house. We have "popcorn" in the kitchen & bathroom; swirls in two of the bedrooms and the hallway and "rainbows" in the lounge and dining room :scared1:
