$2.60 per hour in not a livable wage. In the service industry, this is not feeding a monster. They work for tips, just like a sales person works for commission. If they are paid a livable wage, the price of food would go up even more to balance out the additional wages. You aren’t allowed to critise tipping in the US. Don’t you know it’s your responsibility as a person having a relaxing meal on holiday with your family to pay the wages of a waiter because their employer doesn’t pay them a fair wage? I’m on the Dining Plan (the only reason we book to come here is when we can get the free Dining Plan) and when we end up paying out $60 at every meal for absolutely nothing, it makes my piss boil. It’s just handing out cash for absolutely nothing, they’re just taking an order, putting a couple if plates on a table, then clearing some empties away. *** are you guys accepting this nonsense, you are just feeding a monster that is completely out of control.
Having said that, much of it is out of control. Expecting a 20+% tip for a hair appointment when they are already being paid for a service is crazy. Expecting a 20%+ tip for driving me from point A to point B when I am already paying you well is ridiculous. Expecting a 20%+ tip at a buffet is ridiculous. Expecting a tip as a barista or working at a to-go desk is ridiculous.
Where is has become a monster is that America has become the land of entitlement. (started getting really bad in 2008 and has grown exponentially) Everybody expects a trophy and to be rewarded. That mentality has led to people doing nasty things to food and such when they are not happy about the tip amount. (we never do Door Dash, Uber Eats, Pizza Delivery, etc)
I understand your frustration. Having said that, your tip amount is at your discretion. If you received mediocre/okay service, you are not required to pass over a 20% tip. Don't let it make you angry. It is not worth it.
