I am wondering what we can do to our magic bands that will not interfere with its ability to be read by the scanners. Can it be painted entirely, or do you have to keep the top clear? I just want to know what the limits are before letting the kids have fun with them.

Nothing you do to decorate it (unless you violently smash it or cut it in the middle of the "works") will interfere with the operation of the MB.

Many, many posts on the DIS and on other websites (pinterest.com, etc) from guests who fully "paint" the MBs (fingernail polish is a favorite "paint.")

Just do a google search for "decorate MagicBands," or similar.
Lots of ideas and info out there.

I bought some glow in the dark Halloween MB skins from magicyourband.com

We got these skins from that site also!

I'm excited!! I have the orange band and I'm getting the orange monorail skin for it. I LOVE the monorail. We thought about the "paint" idea and we had ideas for designs and all, but getting enough colors of paints, or having the talent to do it really nicely was too much. The skins idea was much easier and much cheaper and it looks really nice when done.

We have painted ours with all kinds of nail polish, acrylic paint, glitter, stickers, and temporary tattoos....we have even glued huge jewels or bandits over the Mickey head and the magic band still works perfectly.

I don't think it matters. I know that my MB scanned thru my sweatshirt yesterday without a problem.

Just look out for the ingredients used to create the pigment in paint. I wouldn't recommend oils since they tend to use things like cadmium and copper which could in theory cause an issue. As long as you stay away from things containing metal, your magic band RFID should be fine.
