Do you mix woods? I don't like a super matched up look (like a furniture showroom)
I am looking at dining room tables -I found one I like -but it is a bit darker than my existing china cabinet.
What do you think?
My china cabinet is cherry (Thomasville) and the new table I am eyeballing is a darker walnut

I love to mix woods, I have maple, pine, cedar and red oak furniture. I am not a fan of the matched look. The one thing they have in common is that they are all real wood, oiled but not heavily varnished. I think it is harder to pull off if they are laminates.

Interior designers say you should mix woods. Course, I honestly only like the dark mahogany wood only so that is mostly what we have (even if not from the same set, they are all darker shades).

From what you've described, I think it'll look fine since they are both darker woods.

I love the eclectic look. None of the rooms in my house have matching woods, but I love antiques. It takes a lot more time to design, but I think the mixed woods look so much better than everything that matches. My opinion of course. ;)

Thanks everyone -that makes me feel better

ya know what, even if ya did it all wrong, and I was at your house, I wouldnt even notice

Yes, I shamelessly mix my woods with great results. If you find a piece you like go for it. The real decorating is in the accessorizing anyhow.

If your tastes are more traditional, than traditional decorators generally "match" wood or wood types, etc. If your taste is more eclectic or even towards the contemporary, than have pieces that coordinate fit that style of decor. There is no "right way" or "wrong way".

Yes, we mix woods, and I love the way the different woods look in my living room. I think you might need a 3rd piece in a different finish though--if you only have two wood items in the room, different colors might be a bit jarring. Especially if neither of them looks antique, and especially if the color is only slightly different. JMHO. I agree it depends on the rest of your decor, too.

I have natural cherry, walnut, pine and maple in my house right now.

Mix away!!!!!
