Decluttering: What to do with old trophies

Posted this on the CB too, but I knew someone here could be helpful also.

We've been tackling the basement on this wet Fourth of July and are wondering what to do with all our old trophies. Most of mine are broken so they can just go out in the trash. Super jock DH has some large trophies. Sure he's proud, but he doesn't want to waste space with them.

What should we do? Just toss them? Can they be "recycled" or donated to any place? Give me some ideas please!

I don't know about your area but where I am the local Muscular Dystrophy Assn. begs for them for their summer camp program. Might check with them.

We are very proud of him. He is extremely intelligent (7th grade SAT place in 98% state for math) and it is hard sometimes to share (even mommy brag) because it turns off a lot of people. Sometimes I find myself whispering when I talk about him and his achievements.

So thanks for your kind words.

I was the same way as he is when I was in middle school. I won numerous math competitions, including a couple of statewide competitions, along with mathcounts competitions, etc. When I took the actual SATs in high school, I scored a 780 on the math portion. My verbal portion was a totally different story though!

One of my pet peeves..........in our area ALL children recieve trophies for participating in sports, soccer, football, baseball, etc. Now 99% of the trophies are purchased by the parents and given to the children by the coach. These are not earned, as in division winners, etc. but participation trophies.
I know its important for all the ages to feel special, but beyond age 7 I think it gets a bit much. Especially when the parents are paying for them.

Tell me about it! When DD was five, it was ablsolutely painful watching her play soccer, pick at daisies, not listen to the coach, and complain about going. Then she got a trophy for that behavior - Good Lord!

Definately donating is the best way to go.

That way you know someone else will be enjoying them and there won't be any of the sometimes quilt associated with tossing them.

try craigs list for donation.
call your local 4-H club extension office, for them to put in their newsletter.
OR goodwill, etc. someone would take them.

when my daughter was younger & into 'events' & 10 years of 4-h I acquired a lot of cast off trophys that I recycled into 'new' trophys for 4-h club events or for other uses, like rabbit show donations for kids winning animals , ( they appreciated these a LOT).

btw, my daughter ,now grown, still has her collection of over 200 trophys on display at my home, (with wall covered ribbons) after years of spending with her at events , these items are way too precious to just toss.

I've always wondered about this myself. There are some really good ideas here. However, a good number of my trophies are quite unconventional. I've got a lot of them that look like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MathCounts. Of course, mine have dates on them like 1986, 1987, 1988 and not 2001! Any ideas on what to do with those? It's not like they could really pry off the plate and reuse these kind.

I know that the Maryland Baton Council is always looking for donated trophies. We have a member that owns a trophy company and she takes the used trophies and replaces broken parts and we use them for competitions.

I know that a football league near my house is also looking for used trophies.

This might be another idea for you. Hope this helps.

I wish you lived near me because I would come get them from you.

I *think* that the National one was the same size as state, but I honestly don't remember. I only have county and state trophies in my collection. I think that when I was in 7th grade, 2 of our 8th graders went to Nationals, but did not place.
