Decluttering and VHS tapes?

We have 4 garbage bags full of hundreds of VHS tapes (lots of Disney) just taking up space in the basement.

Nobody uses VHS tapes anymore, really. Does anyone out there know of a place I could donate them to? Or do they just finally go in the trash?

Just wondering what you all have done with yours?

I have three boxes full of VHS tapes that I'm keeping. I have a working VCR so there's no need to throw them out just yet. They are filled with movies I taped off tv so I am slowly buying DVD copies of the movies I have to have. Then, I'll throw out the tape.

I threw all mine out. Nobody wants the VHS movies, not the library, not the hospital thrift store, no one it seems. And of course no one wants my tapes from the 1984 Olympics in LA or reruns of The Addams Family.

Our library still has vhs tapes available for check-out. You might want to check with yours.

I still have a working VCR and watch some of the movies that I have. Someday I will take the tapes (the ones of the kids) and have them converted to DVD

Goodwill, Salvation Army, any charity based thrift shops near you ? I know they take them as this is where I score really cheap tapes. We have a DVD/VCR combo unit and watch them on rainy days, or just when feeling nostalgic. Post a list maybe you have something I need :)

We also still have a working VCR and lots of VHS's most of them are Disney ones that are in the vault or we just don't have the DVD or Blueray version. We take the VHS's we don't want anymore to Goodwill. Also our Library will take them so that they can sell them.

Do a "curb alert" on CL. Someone would take them for sure. :thumbsup2

They will be looking for that "Little Mermaid" jacket, the first one they made for the movie.

I have that one along with all my other old vhs movies. they still make/sell the players so I've kept mine. there's also a number of older movies and shows that were released on vhs but have yet to come out on dvd or blu ray so anyone thinking of just tossing theirs out should do a quick search on amazon b/c some can go for $$$.

Good to know.:goodvibes

Also we have used stores that will buy your old stuff, however they go through it and no telling how much they would buy off you or perhaps get store credit.

I have yet to purge my VHS. I have sold some at garage sales.

Records are a hot used item as well.

The Disney ones I sold on ebay. Got 3.00 each for them and sold them in groups of 3.

My husband refuses to get rid of all the VHS tapes in the basement. They are taking up a small room down there.
They were taped from TV shows direct from the TV. He insists he is going to transfer them all to disc - that was 10 years ago and none have been touched.

I'd love it if he purged some.

Thanks everyone! We were saving them for a yard sale, but that's been in the works for a couple of years now so I don't think it's ever going to happen.

I'll see if the library wants them and after that Goodwill (Although I don't think I've seen tapes in Goodwill stores around here.)

Our Goodwill store has a pretty good selection of movies on VHS, and VCRS.

I gave half to the zoo and half to DS's old daycare. The zoo uses them during their camps, when the kids are stuck inside due to weather; same with the daycare.

The ones they couldn't take (PG or higher) went to the local senior center. They put them in their sharing library.

I second Freecycle.

DD#1 doesn't have cable.
She has a VCR and raided our house for all the movies for her and my dgd to watch (including all the Disney movies we own).

we got toshiba vhs/dvd recorder/player/burner and are transferring home movies on vhs to dvd - also certain vhs tapes that aren't available on dvd - will throw out remaining vhs (no library around here wants them - not going to go looking for goodwill, etc to haul them over)

of course DH has his jimi hendrix vhs collection that he will NOT burn to dvd and dump - nope, all those vhs will remain in their 2 large rubbermaid tubs indefinitely.... :rolleyes2
