Had my "tour" and met my guide today--I'm pretty much decided to buy, but having a hard time deciding between Animal Kingdom and SSR. Does SSR not have any restaurants on-site? Are any planned? What in your opinion are the advantages and disadvantages of each (the price difference is not significant enough for that to be of consequence). On the one hand the Animal Kingdom theming appeals to me, but I am afraid I may get tired of it; on the other hand (and maybe just because I haven't seen it in person) SSR by contrast seems "blah."

Is the location of one preferable to the other? I know AKV is close to Animal Kingdom and SSR is across from Downtown Disney--are they pretty accessible to the other parks (especially MK and Epcot?)

I've read threads talking about how quiet SSR is and noisy AKV is--is this true? (Other than the current construction noise of course).

I am really having a hard time deciding and would appreciate others' insights on how they made their decisions!

Thanks--

Cheryl

I cant help you LOL.
I want AKV points really bad.I am so in Love with that resort,we love everything about it.
If you think that you will be spending alot of time at AKV then thats the one that I would go with.SSR you can usually get rooms there with no problem at the 7 month window.
We bought at BCV and VWL so that we would have the advantage of the 11 month window and you do have to have that if you go in the High demand times.

Either way I am sure you will be happy but I am like you AKV wins hands down on appeal over SSR.

Personally I made the decision to buy in sight unseen at SSR r/t the current incentive at the time. Took my first trip and I too was "blah" with SSR. It is very pretty etc but it reminded me of apartment complexes near my home. Don't get me wrong I did not hate it but gave me a distant feel. Then we went to Vero Beach and loved it and on to VWL and loved it.

Stayed last week at VWL for elope/honeymoon and it was great again. We decided to stay an additional night and spent a fortune changing airline tickets and all that was available was pop century, Port Orleans and AKL concierge. Decided to pay an additional $370 a night for AKL since we had never stayed there. Sorry but not impressed. The villas may be better but our room was dark and a cracker box. You could barely move in there. Nice savannah view only no animals to be found. Late at night caught a glimpse of a few.

So after all that my advice is "Buy where you want to stay". Advice given to me and ignored by me by members of this board.

I also visited BCV and BWV on my trip and they looked great. Cannot wait to stay at either of those two. Also went to OKW and really liked main pool area even though it appeared to be spread out as well. Still would like to stay there too. As for SSR or AKV I will pass unless desperate for a trip and no other availability.

Hope this helps!

Had my "tour" and met my guide today--I'm pretty much decided to buy, but having a hard time deciding between Animal Kingdom and SSR. Does SSR not have any restaurants on-site? Are any planned?

SSR has an onsite restaurant (Turf Club Bar & Grill), the somewhat upscale counterservice Artist's Palette ("upscale" because it offers chef selection dinners, salads, gourmet flatbreads as well as hot dogs and chicken tenders). But it also has walking and ferry boat access to DTD's host of restaurants: Raglan Road Irish Pub, Portafino's, Wolfgang Puck, Bongo's, House of Blues, Planet Hollywood, Fulton's Crab House, Capt. Jack's, Earl of Sandwich and a newly planned Dinosaur-themed restaurant.

AKV has Boma's, Jiko's, Mara counter service, and another planned table service restaurant in the new Kidani building. All offer African-styled cuisine. There is no walking access to other restaurants though the closest ones by car are in Animal Kingdom and I believe the All Star Cafe.

AKV offers 3 more years of ownership (expiring in 2057 vs. SSR's 2054). It also provides for 5 occupants in the one bedroom units vs. 4 at SSR. (With the inclusion of a sleeper chair.) One bedroom units also have an additional bathroom. But these benefits are for the newer Kidani buildings. The existing Jambo house units (at the Lodge) are smaller than expected due to retrofits.

AKV offers a wider point schedule spread. You can book value rooms for less points than you would at SSR. Or you can spend more points and stay in concierge rooms (there are only 15 rooms max). Concierge gets you concierge lounge privileges, services and access to book the Sunrise and Sunset safaris.

AKV has a lot of wonderful theming related to an African savannah as well as native guides to broaden the experience for guests. Because it is such a unique theme, it has many devotees and is a great novelty for owners.

On the flip side, SSR is styled like a sprawling health spa resort just outside a busy city. The rooms are lighter in decor and outfitted with typical upstate NY style furnishings. Elegant or pretentious, depending on your POV.

There are 5 "neighborhoods" of SSR that are interconnected through landscaped walkways and a system of lakes. The buildings are designed in the same way, with around 20 units each, and set up so the balconies of each unit overlook a waterway, golf course fairway or side courtyards. (A few units will look out over a landscaped courtyard next to the parking lot.)

The biggest selling points to SSR are the cost (among the lowest dues), ease of parking (each building has its own parking lot), landscaping (owners frequently enjoy walks around the resort), proximity to DTD (guests often visit DTD during a stay for shopping, dining and shows).

As an added bonus, SSR also offers an onsite full service spa as well as a top rated golf course. It has become a hit with adult and teen travelers. But for the kids, the resort also boasts 4 pools (two themed with water play areas), two playgrounds, a lively Community Hall, tennis courts.

Both AKV and SSR require the use of cars or busses to get to theme parks. AKV is only a mile to AK while SSR is only a mile to EPCOT. Still there are no walking paths to either, only roadways. However, they each operate a standalone bus service so you won't be stopping off at other resorts on your way.

Is the location of one preferable to the other? I know AKV is close to Animal Kingdom and SSR is across from Downtown Disney--are they pretty accessible to the other parks (especially MK and Epcot?)

They would each have the similar travel times to MK. (AKV busses take World Drive and SSR busses take the back route by Fort Wilderness.) SSR is a tad closer to EPCOT while AKV is closer to AK.

I've read threads talking about how quiet SSR is and noisy AKV is--is this true? (Other than the current construction noise of course).

AKV noise is associated with the ongoing construction (which will be finished in 18 months) and the design of shared lobbies. AKV's Jambo House has a 6 story tall central lobby with surrounding wings that spiral out into the savannahs. Rooms closest to the lobby (as the concierge and value rooms are) may be picking up the noise from that lobby. Otherwise, it's no different than any other hotel.

SSR is built with sound-absorbing walls to shield guests from the noise of DTD's night club atmosphere. But also, since you have a system of several buildings spread throughout the resort there simply isn't one giant lobby to radiate noise. The resort tends to always feel quiet and empty, until one enters the highest traffic areas: bus stops at park opening, Artist's Palette for breakfast and dinner, the Carriage House at check-in, etc.

I am really having a hard time deciding and would appreciate others' insights on how they made their decisions!

We purchased SSR before AKV was even announced. We did tour it ourselves first. (We also were frequent Disney visitors so had been to all the resorts except Old Key West.) For us, being able to access our car easily as well as the landscaping of the resort made us want to be there. We were also frequent DTD visitors so being able to walk over for meals, movies, or shopping was a big bonus.

We chose not to add on at AKV (instead adding on at SSR) a year later because we felt AKV was more a novelty love for us. Also the lack of being able to do walk anywhere off the savannah made it a downgrade. It is an immersive type of resort that can be restricting at times. (After 5 consecutive trips to Boma's we just tired of African cuisine.) We also felt that since it is a fairly sizeable resort we would have ample opportunities to book a room at 7 months. Booking value or concierge is not a goal for us. We'd want savannah view.

The best advice I can give you is to look at the numbers and ask yourself where you'd be the least disappointed to stay. There will be times that the only room you can book is at your home resort, 11 mos. in advance.

Good luck!

We chose AKV because of having the extra few years on our contract. We have yet to stay at AKV, have been at SSR once fo 5 nights, BCV for one night and going back to SSR in Feb. We really liked SSR. SSR wasn't anything "special" but it was very convenient for us, we liked their food court the "Artist's Palette" especially for breakfast. Just booked our Feb trip 2 days ago and only choice was SSR. Seems like much better availability for last minute trips there. Either way, you can't go wrong, your points are good anywhere and you can book anywhere at the 7 month mark. Good luck with your decision!

And to make it all more confusing, if you really like a resort other than AKC or SSR, you can always go the resale route and get your favorite (or through Disney if they have it available)

We purchased SSR because of the cost difference. I didn't really want to pay for the animals at AKV.....lol.

I haven't gone yet, but have begun planning our trip this year and this has been my thought process.

I was a little disappointed when I began reading up on the resorts and felt maybe we picked the wrong place....mainly because of the availability issues. We will have a harder (not impossible) time changing resorts at 7 months. But the more I have thought about it and got over other people's opinions, I am happy with SSR. I personally really enjoy DTD and having easy access to it 24 hrs is great. By thinking about DTD Restaurants we have the widest variety and selection of different restaurants then the other resorts.

I like AKV and would like to stay there, but I don't think I would want to stay there all the time. I always felt AK was just too far away from everything and we don't plan on having cars when we go down.

We also felt that since it is a fairly sizeable resort we would have ample opportunities to book a room at 7 months. Booking value or concierge is not a goal for us. We'd want savannah view.

Good luck!

great points on the similarities and differences

however, I think the thought process is quite backwards on this one point. you will have an enormously easier time booking into SSR from AKV than the other way around.

we own both, but if I had to pick just one it would be AKV. you will get the home advantage at AKV and still almost never have an issue getting into SSR whenever you want

Buy where you want to stay. If you're into SSR, buy there. If not, and you're into AKV, buy there.

AKV Considerations
  • Concierge Rooms (the only DVC with them) and point-saving Value accommodations will go quick. Thus, the 11-month home resort booking window will be more advantageous at AKV than SSR. These types of rooms will go quick and probably necessitate calling at 11 months.
  • The 1 BR can sleep 5 versus 4 at SSR. Also, the rooms at the new Kidani Village will have an extra bathroom compared to SSR.
  • Great exotic theme (African game reserve) with unique decor
  • The Savannah with the views of the animals (20+ species)
  • Samawati Springs Pool - 4,700-sq-ft with slide and 2 whirlpool spas (Kidani), plus themed Uzima pool at AKL
  • Excellent onsite restaurants: Jiko and Boma, plus new Sanaa TS
  • Lease is 3 years more than SSR (2057 vs. 2054)
  • Attached to a deluxe resort hotel (AKL) – room service & valet parking
  • Some GV have pool tables
SSR Considerations
  • Lower maintenance fees!
  • Direct access to DTD (for restaurants and nightlife)
  • Onsite Spa
  • Completed (unlike AKV, which is under construction)
  • Apartment-style setup; standalone, not attached to any hotel
  • Elegant and sophisticated décor (understated, subdued theme)
  • Golf course on property
  • Large, very spread out resort (the largest DVC resort)
  • Long distance from some rooms to dining and services
  • Themed pool - rock formations/springs/water slide
  • Limited onsite dining (Artists Palette and The Turf Club)
  • Has convenient self parking
  • No room service or valet parking; Outdoor hallways
I bought AKV...

thanks for everyone's thoughts--so AKV does have room service? What type of food is served through room service at AKV (i.e., is it African themed too?)

I keep reading about how everyone LOVES AKL. While I think it is very "cool" looking, the lobby is amazing and the idea of the animals appeals to me too but...
The rooms seem really small and VERY dark. I feel like I am in a cave unless the sun is shining very brightly that day. The rooms at SSR are bright and cheery.
Also, when I see the plans for Kindani.. it seems that you could end up "far from the action". At least at SSR, there a number of quiet pools and if you aren't close to the restaurant(s) there then you are close to the DTD restaurants.
From SSR, you are very close to DTD, and reasonably close to Epcot and DHS and TL. From AKL you are really only close to DAK and BB and you are really far from MK.

I am not saying that I don't like AKL, it is just that you hear so much criticism of SSR and only glowing reviews of AKL. To me, each resort has +'s and -'s. We all have different tastes/likes/dislikes, that is why they make each resort so different. SSR is one of my home resorts and I like it!

The PassPorter's Walt Disney World 2008 published the following bus transit times:

.....AKV.... SSR
MK ..20 min 25 min
EP ..15 min 10 min
DHS .10 min 15 min
AK ..5 min .20 min

According to PassPorter, you are actually closer to the MK at AKL. So you are not "really far from MK" at AKL. I think the AKL gives you a "feeling" of remoteness, which I like after a long day at a park

Yes.... maybe it just seems so far away.
I used GPS co-ordinates to check. AKL is a little closer to MK than SSR (almost 1 mile).

A couple of observations:

First of all, home resort ONLY has any meaning at all if you can book during the 11-month window. If you can set your vacation dates more than seven months ahead of time, and IF where you stay matters to you, then buying where you want to stay most of the time makes sense. I would never recommend buying where you'd be disappointed to stay.

Many people can't plan their vacations that far ahead -- or don't care where they stay -- and for them, "Buy where you want to stay" is just a cliche.

But keep in mind that the world changes. Your ability to plan 7+ months ahead could change (positively or negatively) over time.

Second -- and maybe more importantly -- you are considering two completely different types of DVC resorts. One is attached to a deluxe hotel. The other is stand alone.

Mike gave you an excellent comparison of many features of both hotels, but not all of those features have equal weight for all owners.

For example, room service is important if you use room service. We don't...or at least, not at WDW. But, if you have a car available, parking at your door is HUGE ...especially when you are returning late at night, or scrambling to make a character breakfast ADR. Valet is French for "Bring the car S-L-O-W-L-Y!" and if you're in a hurry to go someplace, valet parking can be a big negative.

In comparing these resorts -- providing you're going to be actually using your home resort booking advantage -- I'd consider first the type of resort, and then I'd consider the individual features of each resort and how likely I am to actually use them.

I'd completely ignore the 3-year difference in length of contract. That's insignificant.

you will get the home advantage at AKV and still almost never have an issue getting into SSR whenever you want
I agree with this- I am a happy SSR owner, but as I see it- there is no home resort advantage to owning there (over another wdw resort), other than the fact that you can buy-in for less $.

All of the DVC resorts are nice, but IMHO I think OKW and SSR has the kind of atmosphere that doesn't get "old". Sort of timeless.

I agree AKV is very cool and I love the theme. However, I think I would get bored with it a little quicker than I would at SSR or OKW. I will compare it to pizza. Sure I love pizza...but I couldn't eat it every day. If I had to I might get sick of it.:rotfl: SSR is like chicken...you can do a lot with it. lol!!

At SSR there are a lot of areas that you can stay at. I plan on staying in the Grandstand section on my next trip. However, I couldn't decide if I wanted to stay in Congress Park or The Spring either. I also like that if you get tired of eating at the resort restaurant, you can easily get to DTD for more options. I like the idea of having a spa so close. Some people like to golf.

I guess what I am trying to point out...is that there are a lot of options at SSR to keep you from having the same old vacation time and time again. I won't use the spa each time, and my DH won't golf every time and i won't feel like I have to eat at the Turf Club because it is so close.

I rambling now....anyway, do you get what I mean?

I like all the DVC resorts and I want to stay at all of them at some point. Maybe even many times, but if all I could get was SSR each time it would be fine too. I can't see myself getting tired of it.

Good luck on your decision. :)

I decided on SSR. I got the $10 off per point discount and the 100 developer points (on a 160-point contract). Since I bought in California--and probably the most important thing to me--I will be a member of the "Founder's Club" so have the right to buy up to 160 points at the Grand Californian when those go on sale. (Which I will probably do.) I am an adult, no kids, and will most likely be taking other adults with me so decided being close to Downtown Disney was more important than the animals. I also like the brightness of SSR.

Frankly, the one negative I have about SSR is the lack of on-site dining--especially room service since it is not attached to a hotel. Will most likely rent a car because of the on-site parking and utilize the kitchen facilities for most breakfasts (which is when I would be most likely to need on-site dining).

Our thoughts exactly! We tried to look at where we would want to be through all of the changes in our lives - kids - grown children - grandkids - retirement - SSR was our best choice. We love it!!

Good luck deciding! You will choose the right place for you.
