Deciding whether to buy or not....

I've been debating whether to buy DVC since my first trip to WDW in 2013. We did a tour with Mark and liked the model rooms, but I went in without doing research about the resale options and we were staying off-site and we had no experience with the on-site amenities, so we didn't buy then. Looking at the price per point now, the $145pp at the VGF back in 2013 doesn't look so bad now.... . We love Disney and are looking at buying some points at PVB. We really love the Polynesian theme and it reminds me of home, as I grew up in Honolulu.

A couple of questions, since we always travel in Oct, Nov, Dec timeframe, what UY would be good? I was thinking a September UY to be able to take a spring trip if we can or bank the points to the next UY. Also, seeing that the PVB is all studios or bungalows, we shouldn't have a problem at 11 months in regards to availability? How is the availability at Aulani at 6-7 months out using my PVB points, in case I would like to stay there or treat my mom to a stay-cation there?

I'm worried that the bungalows put to many points in play at PVB, and studios could be difficult to book. But, on the other hand, there are a log of studios there. We won't really know for sure for two or three more years.

Seven month availability anywhere is going to depend on the time of year. I think Aulani may be a little easier than some others, but budget for the rooms that cost more points. Don't expect to be able to get the cheapest room anywhere at seven months.

Thanks for the info. Wet haven't gone in September just because I like the Christmas and Halloween decorations and parties. So, maybe an October UY would be better.

Also because Poly DVC is still so new I don,t know if any resale contracts are available yet. Though if not it shouldn't be long.

One of the major problems that a new buyer has IMO is understanding the DVC system and knowing where to buy. Only after spending time as a member and staying at all of the resorts can you really have the information needed to make an educated purchase decision.

We bought BLT prior to staying there and it isn't one of our favorites.

I suggest that you buy at the less expensive SSR, Oct UY, and use the points to stay at all of the DVC resorts. You will find out first hand the ins and outs of being a DVC owner, where you like to stay and how hard it is to book at 7 months when you like to vacation.

Later you can sell SSR and buy your favorite resort, if it is PVB, there will be plenty of resale contracts.

You are still well into the "can still burnout phase." I'd rent points for a few trips - or, as Bill says, buy SSR and see what the system is like. You've been twice in two years - you may yet discover that you want other things from vacation than another trip on Toy Story Mania. It happens.

You'll want Poly points for the Poly. Which is awesome if you are fairly well off and aren't saving for college for any children. But the points are expensive, the rooms cost a lot of points per night, and you'll end up spending a lot more than you will on that Pop Century room you are staying in for your next trip. DVC in general is a luxury purchase - buying the Poly or VGF is definitely a luxury purchase.

If you always or almost always travel in Oct.-Dec, consider renting points to try out several resorts and book at the 11 month mark (or between 11 and 7 months). That last quarter of the year is the busiest time for DVC, and it's already difficult to book many of the resorts at the 7-month mark. If you buy SSR you may not get to "try" much other than SSR. I agree that we won't know PVB 7-month availability patterns for several years, and those points are too expensive to buy unless you always want to stay at the Poly, never anywhere else.
