December 2016 book or wait??

We are a family of 5. Going December 17 to 23or24/2016. Should I book room now and hope there is a discount to be had later or do I hold out and wait? If there is no discount would consider off site or at Disney's partner hotel...

If you're looking for a specific room type - (theme park view, etc) book now. (EG A few years back I booked a New Years Eve trip at the Polynesian club level TPV and I absolutely booked that one almost a year in advance. ) Christmas time isn't going to give you many discounts, especially that close to Christmas day but if they do you can always call up and try to get the discount applied (if it matches your room time, dining plan, etc; )

24th falls on a Saturday this year - I'd say the crowds are going to plan their trip starting from the Friday before hand (the 23rd). Up to the Christmas Holiday, especially the week before the crowds aren't too bad yet so I'd say you could hold off until about 6 months beforehand (when you want to start taking advantage of the 6 month in advance ADRs). If you're going to do 17-23 and no specific room I think it'd be safe to book about 6-7 months out. If you're going for the 24th I'd start thinking about it 8-9 months out but probably 6-7 months out will still be fine.

Only reason to book now is if you will stay in that room with no discount. If discounts come out those rooms are first come first serve basis. Having a room already booked is of no advantage. You will have to scramble to get a discounted room like everyone else. If too many people booked non-discounted rooms there is no reason for WDW to offer discounts.

So:

If you are going to go regardless of discount book now. If you are only prepared to stay with a discount than wait.
