I know it's a long way off, but in 2054 when DVC is officially "over" how am I going to use my Dec Use Year points??? Will I have to borrow them into the 2053 year? or will I have until Nov. 30 2055 to use them??? or will I receive my last points in Dec. 2053??? This is the one question I forgot to ask our guide, but I'm sure one of you has the answer.
Thanks!!!!

Watch and see what happens when the points expire in 2042 -- they'll probably handle things the same way. ;)

Truly, no one knows how the "end" is going to work out.

The contracts end on 1/31/2054. Since there is no January Use Year, the last points that anyone will receive will actually be 2053 points.

Speculation is that DVC will have to impose additional limitations on banking / borrowing and the overall use of points in the last couple of years just to help balance the overwhelming demand that is sure to occur. How will it all play out? I guess we'll find out together in about 45 years or so...

I'm planning to borrow my last year's worth of points in 2041 so I don't have to worry about it.;) Of course rumor has it that borrowing will be suspended in the last few years, so there goes my plan!!!

According to the SSR contracts, ownership interests expire and revert back to DVD on January 31, 2054. Since all contracts officially began in 2004 (n.b. Some people received incentives in lieu of being able to officially use their contracts in 2004), 50 years' worth of use would have the contracts ending in 2053. Your last points would become available in December 2053. I guess you'd either have a month to use them or, of course, you could borrow them ahead of time.

That's my (admittedly limited) read on the situation.

Cheers.

Consider that DVC points are actually just a representation of your real estate usage rights. Let's suppose that your DVC resort "ends" six months from the beginning of your final use year. That should mean you'll get half of your normal amount of points.

DVC can't provide more points than there is capacity.

I hope that I live and am in good shape to find out the answer when it happens. I will be 95 years old that month.

I have seen statements similar to this made many times on this board. But I am wondering if in fact the opposite won't be true and there will be lackluster demand as the end nears.

There have been other threads where folks have talked about friends and neighbors who are in DVC and simply let unused points expire. They consider banking to be a hassle and just don't worry about unused points. Remember the vast majority of DVC members do not frequent this forum and are not as aware of all the ins and outs of DVC.

50 years from now everyone's life will be very different than what it is now. Many DVC members may have forgotten about DVC and just stop using it. I would imagine that over time there will be a higher rate of default as folks get older and simply stop paying the maintenance so DVC ends up reclaiming the points. DVC memberships will be passed on to heirs that may not be nearly as interested in DVC as the original owner.

And when (if?) that happens, DVC becomes owner of the points, which they can either resell or use to set aside more rooms for cash reservations. The net impact is still a smaller block of owners angling for a smaller block of rooms.

What you describe (people not using their points) actually happens frequently today as evidenced by the fact that people actually CAN get rooms on short notice. If everyone were using their points, the resorts would be booked darn close to capacity 365 days / year--and that's just not the case.

As long as WDW remains a desirable travel destination, there will be a demand for the points and thus a demand for the accommodations. Will I be using my SSR points 50 years from now? Gee, I hope so. If not, hopefully my kids will be. If they don't develop a strong interest in Disney, then we'll sell the remaining years and at least get SOME value out of it.

We can speculate all we want about how travel patterns and desires will change over the next half-century. If nothing else, I tend to look at Disneyland as a model for WDW. 50 years and going strong...

This subject has come up before. My opinion, anyone that owns right now should be happy when the time comes that they are around for the outcome. Take things as they come why are people so worried about how it will be for their DVC in 45 or 50 years. If 40 years from now I am still a member and able to go then I will figure this out. There are other things more important to worry about now than DVC in 50 years.

For a fee (like 10% of their points!) I would love to manage their points that they let expire. Ahhh, to actually BANK points and not have to BORROW points....

PamOKW... You may be right. They may have the same experience as DVCI owners, but it depends on how much expansion will occur to the point were a DVCIII set of resorts are developed.

When DVCI contracts expire, there will likely be a number of active DVCII resorts like SSR to soften the impact. In 2041, there may be no great need for any special policy. We'll simply borrow our 2041 points and have a great time at any existing SSR, EP, CRV, ABC or XYZ DVC resort.

In 2054, it's possible there will be active DVCIII resorts. At the very least, in the 10 year interim, they'll do something with the existing resorts, and could possibly replace OKW,BWV,VWL,BCV with new DVCIII class resorts, in time for SSR owners to pack it in.

It's the circle of DVC life.
